Anyone else having MMS issues with picture size?

got my evo at 6 this morning from Radio Shack and I love it.

Now onto my problem, if i click share on a picture i took with the camera - and send using messaging / MMS it says picture too large and starts resizing it - and it resizes the picture to a resolution of 194x324 with a file size of 20.1 KB - the original picture was taken in 8M mode but only has a resoltion of 1.5 MB and I have the MMS setting for maximum size to be 2M

I have tried it in every single setting for picture size and it does the same thing, and when you get the message - it is super tiny and zooming in only makes it worse.

Anyone have a fix?

Hmm... I am curious about this as well.

Last time I sent an MMS I took the picture directly with the message. I noticed it automatically set my camera resolution to small (640x380) and it proceeded to send the image with no problems after. file size was about 100KB.

This is a limitation of the MMS. It simply was not designed to handle photos at the resolutions phones are cranking out now. When it was designed, cell phones cameras were at a max resolution of .3 megapixels. The MMS server will try to compress the photo as much as it can, but by the time it gets it small enough, it's the size of a postage stamp. Most MMS servers only allow up to around 300 KB sized file and then will try to make them smaller if it can.

The really only option is to take photos at the lowest quality and resolution (or reduce the resolution until it works without trying to resize it) if you must send it via MMS. I prefer to email if possible as many people can access email from their phones these days or upload pictures to a site like Photobucket or Flickr and share it that way.

+1.
You beat me to it. Still, I think you said it better and used less words (than I would have used).

I tested it from my EVO to a Palm Pixi, even though it resized it, it still looked good on the other phone.

good to know, i haven't tested that out with anyone else yet, just strange it gives and option for 2MB message size for MMS but compresses any pictures down to that insanely small resolution for me

Agreed. I was able to send 1MB+ files on my Touch Pro 2 without them being resized.

I believe Handcent allows you to do the same thing also. I haven't used Handcent since the Motorola Droid, but I swear there's a feature in there that allows you keep original size.

cannot find handcent on the market from the EVO so that is a no go.

It's listed but when you click on it, it says "not available" and gives you the market error......

unixpsycho:

Have you tried Handcent? Does it address the issue of resized mms photos?
How is the interface on the EVO?
Thanks

I noticed this as well... I don't think it makes a difference it if was sent through Handcent SMS or not.... What's interesting is Handscent SMS will resize down the picture, to a few hundred kb, but the recipient will still end up getting a 20-40kb sized picture even smaller then what was sent from your end... I'm guessing the servers that's forwarding the pictures are also doing compression on their end.
