Really my only problem now. My battery has been doing 'ok' but my reception is not nearly as good as it was on the Evo.

It sounds like your at the mercy of Sprint and hardware. I have read about signal boosting and other things that someone posted on XDA. They were suggested to ROM devs for options to improve things but I'm not sure if they are/were ever incorporated into ROMs.

Could very well be some that are. It depends on the internal antenna so I could see there being some slight variations in mass production/assembly.

Improving reception

Is your reception a problem indoors or outside?
FYI, I had terrible reception in my home. Called Sprint, and they suggested I install an Airave. Since I installed the Airave unit, I haven't had anymore problems. Maybe something worth discussing with Sprint.

Sprint just sent me thev airave. Haven't installed it yet since I had to go out of town to get it since they couldn't find my address. After 2 long weeks, I finally have it. I'm going to hook it up today when I go home. I think its funny, I noticed when I roam onto vzw, the signal bar doesn't jump around. Hmmmm. If the airave doesn't work out well for me, I will have to jump ship and had over to vzw, they at least have service in my building and at work. I may have to do so anyways because I roam at work and can't send texts for some reason (no sprint customer can). Really sad since I'm in miami which is a 4g city.

Already have the airave and get great reception at home. It's when I'm out and about, mainly to and from work where there are several weak areas. The Evo not once dropped a call in these spots but the Epic has every time. I actually ran real signal and the Epic showed -106 while the Evo showed -103 at the same spot. Not a big diff, but the Epic dropped the call and Evo didn't. Hope this helps someone troubleshoot the problem.

I have an Epic that I bought in October. I didn't realize the reception was poor until our family got two other epics more recently. Their Epics typically had a higher signal than mine by 10dBm, sometimes 15dBm. This led me to compare to a couple of other Epics at work. Mine was always lower. Tested at work, inside my home, outside my home, driving around with two phones side by side, my phone was lower 95% of the time. Where Sprint signal is (with a good phone) 2 to 3 bars, I was lucky if I had one. This causes one-way voice calls (typically I can hear them, they can't hear me) or the 3G not to connect. I couldn't take it anymore, I finally got Sprint to replace my Epic, it should arrive mid this coming week. Hopefully it will be good one.

I actually sent my phone into Samsung in attempt to get this fixed, but they sent it back in the same condition and they wouldn't tell me what they did or didn't do in attempt to fix it.

You can check signal strength in Settings - About phone - Status.

Does the roam control thing work after rooting?

Yes, It does. I bought Roam Control and it has been working very well. I do not have signal at home, so Sprint sent me the white box (Airwave) long time ago. Sadly, my brother uses the internet a lot because he works from home most of the time. He has to turn it off. If he had the airwave turn on the internet would be very slow. Our speed is about 7Mbs. When he turns off, I have to turn on the roam control. Otherwise, I will not have signal.

Have you gotten your first bill after using roam contol? When using roam control, you relinquish the AnyMobile Free minutes that you get with your plan. Even if you call another sprint phone, you'll be charged your regular alotted minutes. Same scenario happens when using data roaming.

I found out the hard way unfortunately with a massive bill.

I just got a YX400-P Zboost from Tiger Direct for our office. 3 of us are Sprint customers and we work in the same area so we split the $129 cost 3 ways and went from 1 bar to 4-5 bars. My battery life, normally dropped from 98% to 80% in 2 hours is still at 95% 3.5 hours later (I also toggle off 3G and kill extraneous services like SNService, Sanservice, and DRM as well)! The booster is on a window ledge where our phones would get 2.5-3 bars. We all <30' from the booster and we are all getting about 4-5 bars. Wow!
