Not a request for assistance.

Have I been a dumbo all this time, and has this always been possible.

I can now connect my phone to my Chromecast with data off and free hotel WiFi on. Tethering is on and the Chromecast only recognises my phone's Hotspot, not the hotel wifi.

I don't have WiFi at home so always used my phones data to view YT on my TV screen via my PC.

This happened at a cheapish but very decent hotel brand with Samsung TV's for some weekend stays.

I've always use my Chromecast 3 at these to watch You Tube primarily, but always needed a decent data signal on my phone, so sone inner courtyard rooms had poor data reception.

Is this unusual or has it always been possible?

It's always been possible (at least on Samsung phones that I can recall); you can use the phone to share an existing WiFi connection. You can do the same with some programs on PCs. This is useful, too, if you want to use a VPN on devices that don't support them by routing the traffic through the phone with a VPN active.

Thanks.
Live and learn I guess.
Didn't make any sense to me.
In the early Android years data for tethering was extremely limited. I used a MiFi unit or USB dongle thing with it's own data only sim card.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure! And it's limited, too, compared to a travel router or an actual router/AP. But 'in a pinch' it does help!

Let's keep it between ourselves. 🤔

I'm sure I must have tried it in the past. 😎
One of the useful places I've used this in are planes! Since I have free WiFi with my phone plan, but you have to sign on from the phone (SMS authentication), then I can just 'share' my phone WiFi with my tablet or companions that may not have free WiFi :)
