Re: Anyone get one

It mostly just works, so not too much to discuss. Tho I have to renter my work WiFi password almost every time I pull it out, which is annoying. Not an issue on my home network or anywhere else I've tried.

Re: Anyone get one

When the shield tablet was 1st released, I think it sold quickly: at least that is my impression since Gamestop's and Best Buy's availability went out rather quickly. Newegg's (i bought mine here) inventory was on back-order for a while too.
In any case, I suspect that the people buying the shield tablet are people wanting to play games on it and don't visit Android sites much or at all?
As such, I just got mine today and so far it's very nice. I'm getting used to using the stylus (does anyone have any tips?)
In the next few days, I'm going to start trying out some games. (any recommendations on games that showcase this tablet's abilities?)

Oddly I am one who didn't really buy it for gaming. I was keen on the stylus for note-taking and it's been pretty good. I also like the Nexus-ness (was looking to replace my very slow Nexus 7 (2012). Tho I have been playing Leo's Fortune on it tonight and it's a lot of fun with the nicely designed worlds and good music from the front-facing speakers.
Yeah, I have had the Shield for over a month but my cover just shipped. Haven't bought a controller tho may eventually so I can play games in console mode.

What are you using the stylus for? I've used it almost exclusively in Evernote. Some occasional wonky stuff with handwriting recognition (I use the tablet's built in text input mode, not Evernote's free handwriting capabilities), but by and large it performs admirably. I haven't ever used a stylus before so can't compare to active technologies or anything.

For handwriting, I have had trouble with the palm rejection. If the side of my hand makes first contact, it sometimes registers as the stylus and I wind up pushing a capacitative button. I wish I had some good tips, but can't say that I do.

Sites like best buy and game stop are showing back ordered or even pre order? I wanted to go in and see the tablet in person but I might just order it via same site or similar

I'd love to get one, especially because it has native twitch/recording integration and the pen, but it's sadly not gonna happen.

Why not? See me and Andy up there are propably the only ones buying it and not really caring so much about gaming. I just wanted a nice tablet smaller than my previous one

It's fun to use the stylus just for normal things even if you're not handwriting or drawing. It's even nice using it for playing some casual games.(try it with Tetris!)
As for buying this tablet, I'd just just pulling the trigger on it and order it online. Before I finally bought it online, i looked at best buy and gamestop. None of them had it in stock and they still don't! (at least not in my area)

Mine just arrived from Best Buy Tuesday and the controller arrived from Nvidia on Thursday. So far really liking both.

How is the controller? Which games have you been using it with? I'm on the fence in regards to buying it, especially at the $60 price tag.
How is the battery life on the controller?

I've been thinking about the gaming aspect of this tablet and I strongly feel that it needs to have a charging/multi-media dock. I could see myself buying a dock if it had an hdmi, ethernet and 1 - 2 usb ports. The dock could sit on a coffee table that's between a big screen TV and the couch.

So far just asphalt 8 and riptide 2. I loaded up Diablo 3 from the PC on it and it works terrific as a display - but the controller can't be set up to control movement in that style of game, so I'm looking for other things to test out the pc game functionality on it.

I've had the Shield for nearly a week now and thought I would give some of my impressions of the device. I have had the Samsung Note 10.1 (2012) version, which I got tired of the big screen, all the Samsung bloat ware, proprietary cables and lack of updates.

I replaced the Note with a used LG G Pad 8.3. I have been much happier with the smaller size, but it performed slow when it came to games. When I saw the Shield, though, I couldn't resist.

Pros
  • No major bloat ware!!! This is a big plus for me, being almost pure Android.
  • Super fast. I am very impressed with performance during games and watching movies.
  • The screen has awesome graphics and performance, and is very responsive.
  • Music on the SD card doesn't have drop-outs, like on the G Pad and many other Android devices I've seen.
  • Updates from Nvidia seem to be very proactive.
  • Having a stylus is awesome and this one is way better than the Note one. It glides so smoothly and is very precise.
  • Sound from the speakers is beyond compare for tablet speakers.
  • Ability to control CPU usage more precisely, including optimizing apps.
  • Camera performs quite well and takes great pictures for a tablet, but the camera app they replaced the standard Android with is a bit much for just taking a picture.
  • HDMI with a standard mini-HDMI port.
  • Non-proprietary cables.

Cons
  • Edge of the front face seems to be a bit sharp and uncomfortable to hold one-handed.
  • Border on the long side of tablet is too narrow, often causing me to touch areas of the screen with my thumb when holding it vertically.
  • With the weight, the front edge and the border mentioned, it doesn't fit my hand as comfortable as the LG G Pad.
  • Although the graphics are awesome, the screen reflects other light sources a bit much, requiring me to tilt it away from office lights when in use.
  • The power button is hard to press and could stick out a bit more.
  • At first, the stylus was near impossible to remove, but has loosened up after use.

The weight of the cons I listed are minor compared to the pros. I don't regret the move to the Shield.

Thanks for the thoughts. I concur, largely. Power button is a bummer but having the cover (or other cover with magnets) that turns screen on and off for you means less use of that pesky button. (Between that and having an LG G3 I hardly have any use for power buttons!)

I have experienced some UI sluggishness simply accessing the app drawer or the home screen. I think it's primarily after I wake the tablet from sleep, but can't be sure it doesn't happen other times too. Anyone else?

Hoping we see Android L in the next couple of weeks (for the WiFi version, anyhow)!

Interesting. The only resemblance of sluggishness I've seen was right after I slammed it with all my apps for the first time. I am using Nova launcher and it is very responsive.

I do have one very annoying issue. At work, we have a separate WiFi for mobile devices. Connection is intermittent at best and sometimes just says the connection is saved and is completely disconnected. The WiFi is Cisco based, with multiple APs on different channels. I am aware of the issue with Android on this type of network, but have tried the apps that supposedly fix the issue, but I still have the same behavior.

Apple devices do not have this issue on this network. My previous LG G Pad did not have the issue.

I just received the LTE version over the past weekend. Just before that, I got a refurb deal on a Samsung Tab 8.4.
Comparing the two, the screen on the Samsung just blows away the Shield. While nothing is "wrong" with the shield screen, the fact that the buttons are soft and take up precious screen real estate, whereas the Samsung buttons are hard buttons on the bezel, makes the Shield screen seem small. The Samsung screen is higher resolution, and whites are brighter overall, the colors seem nicer. The Samsung screen is not a AMOLED, so I would think the Samsung and Shield screens would look more similar.

I'm working with the screen set to "full screen" and just swiping to get to the buttons, and that helps.

Oddly, last night, my Shield completely drained the battery, to the point it would not turn on this morning. When I left it, it was over 80% full. I have the official smart cover and it was closed. After I fueled it up this morning, enough to turn on, I looked at batter usage, and Screen was 47% and Cell Standby was 17%. Cell Standby? I haven't even used the LTE yet (i've been on WIFI except for a quick speedtest on LTE) so not sure what this is. I don't like the fact that it died overnight, though. I will have to keep an eye on it.

Yeah, I have had an issue with WiFi at work too. Probably the exact same network type you describe. Have to Modify network and resave for it to connect, sometimes. Definitely annoying. My LG G3 connects fine but struggles to keep up as I move between access points in the building. But my Nexus 4 and 7 (after some initial issues with Jelly Bean) handled it fine. Don't know what to blame, but not every Android device will encounter the issue.

Picked one up yesterday. So far I am enjoying it. The feel of the device is good however it does tend to have some harp feeling edges all around where the screen meets the sides. The quality of the screen is very good however the AUTO brightness could use a bit of tweaking because it tends to run a little dim. The sound quality of the speakers are good. Not super loud, but more than adequate and much better than most any other tablet out there. The performance has been snappy although I am experimenting with a few different browsers for now, I'm chromed out...I like the stylus. I need to calibrate the handwriting feature is possible to improve overall response otherwise I like having the option of having it there. I use the stylus instead of touch input as a nice change of pace. I am also someone who didn't purchase the tablet for its gaming abilities. Its a GREAT extra for me as I mostly wanted a powerful android tablet first. So far so good!
