I just picked up the Huawei watch when Amazon had it on sale for $269. I have had quite a few smartwatches, including two Pebbles, the Fitbit Surge (barely a smartwatch), the original Samsung Galaxy Gear, the Moto 360 (with an android phone), and the Apple Watch. I find the Huawei watch to be the best looking watch, not only because the case looks like a proper watch (and not a mini iPhone strapped to my wrist or a square LCD), but the watch faces themselves are very watch-like and attractive.
For all its sophisticated features, the Apple Watch doesn't look like a watch, it looks like a tiny iPhone.
I also thought the Apple Watch tried to do too much. I really just wanted the functionality of the Pebble but with a much nicer looking device and screen. The Huawei watch provides that. It paired with the iPhone without any difficulty and immediately began downloading the 1.4 (Marshmallow) update. That took about 4 hours. In fairness, the Apple Watch did the same thing but was a bit faster. If you don't leave the Android Wear app running on your iPhone, the Huawei constantly looses connection (and sometimes does even if the app is running). But mostly, I find that it works a lot like the Pebble worked. You get all your notifications - with a very weak vibration as others have mentioned - and you can even control music features. That's about it.
I love the ambient mode, which dims the screen but leaves the time visible! No more jerking your wrist like you are having a small seizure just to get the time to light up! Much easier to casually glance and see the time. Like, you know, a watch.
What I like with iOS:
-Looks like a proper watch
-Faces are a lot more attractive than the Apple watch
-Notifications work really well
-Easy and cheap to swap bands (I got the magnetic Milanese loop steel band for less than $25)
-Ambient mode so time is always visible
-Better battery life than Apple watch
What I don't like:
-Can't make or answer calls on your wrist with iPhone (works on Android)
-No maps on your wrist
-Somewhat frequent disconnects from the phone
-Notifications are basically one-way (phone to watch)
-Heart rate monitor and fitness data go nowhere (not even passed along to Google fit)
-Step counter is TERRIBLE. Compared to a Fitbit, the Huawei misses 50% to 60% of steps. Its WAY off.
-Ambient mode almost impossible to see in the sunlight
Overall, I am still happy with the purchase and I hope Google adds more features to the iPhone version. Its not as features as it would be connected to an Android phone but it works about as well as a Pebble and looks a whole lot better.
