I understand there are plenty out there, but most use CWM and I here everyone on here saying to use TWRP.

so can anyone do a short and to the point bare bones guide to flashing roms to the EVO 3d?

please :-/

Basically...

Download the ROM.zip and place it on the ROOT of your SD card.

Boot into recovery

MAKE A BACKUP

then...

Wipe Data/factory reset

Wipe Cache

Wipe Dalvik

Install zip from SD

Choose ROM.zip that you want to install..

Someone beat me to it...

Most ROM creators should include instructions on how to flash when they post the ROM for download.
Regardless of which recovery you are using, the process is pretty much the same.
1.Download the ROM
2. Place at the root of your SDcard
3. Boot into Recovery (Make back up of current setup)
4. Some ROMs require that you wipe data, Dalvic, or wipe everything. See individual instructions per ROM. (I prefer to wipe everything out of good habit. I feel it is better to start with a clean slate)
5. Now select "Install Zip"
6. Some recovery will ask you to confirm
7. Enjoy your new ROM

I do in all of my posts as it is required for posting per AndroidCentral developer guidelines.

In recovery.. there is an option for Backup and Restore... Make a BACKUP in RECOVERY, this will take a min but backup everything and you will be safe if you accidentally mess up flashing a bad ROM.

Simply put. The Nandroid Backup backs up everything. If you restore it, it will set your phone up exactly like it was when you made the backup.

You can use Titanium backup to restore bits and peices (downloaded apps and saved game date for example) to your new ROM.

Yea sorry im on some coffee and boredom right now.. waiting for my daughter to get here lol

Anything different for the custom kernel process?

would that also be from inside TWRP - flash zip ?
is your kernel in the full backup or outside of it hidden somewhere?

just want to be sure before I jump to the next step.

many thanks from a Android newb

you flash a kernel the same way you would a ROM. within recovery, unless otherwise stated on the thread you download it from. The kernel is backed up within the recovery tool with your ROM. So if you backup without a custom kernel then it will be stock. Also do check the ROM build because some come with custom kernels already. Hope this helps
