I did unlock the bootloader successfully (but I get a quick warning on startup saying "Your device software can't be checked for corruption. Please lock the bootloader", and then continues on. I heard there is some extra security built into either Marshmallow or the 5x/6p, that's why the message).

I did try some things after doing a search, specifically for the 5x, but even though they said 5x, I think they were leftovers from the 5 rooting process. Ending up in a loop, so I sideloaded one of the 5x images from the developer site and restored.

So I think I'll wait for the Nexus Root Toolkit to update their software (as I never had a problem with it) and see if they come up with something.

I've rooted my 5X after getting it in the mail yesterday

Outline of what you need to do
  1. Unlock bootloader (which you did)
  2. Flash a modified boot.img for bullhead ([WIP][2015.10.28] Android 6.0 Marshmallow - XDA Forums > scroll down and download "bullhead-mdb08i-boot.zip" > unzip file after download)
    Code:
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
  3. Flash TWRP recovery for bullhead (https://dl.twrp.me/bullhead/)
    Code:
    fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-bullhead.img
  4. Boot into TWRP recovery and mount /system/
  5. ADB push SuperSU zip file to /system/. You need a SuperSU version greater than 2.50
  6. Install SuperSU zip file
  7. Reboot

Thank you sir, much appreciated. And a quick question...looks like no data loss as you are not flashing userdata.img? Correct?
