Anyone use an external antenna?

I see antenna patch cables on eBay (and other sites), to allow the antenna ports to be used with an external antenna for better reception. I know these ports can easily be damaged by using the wrong connector, or just over-using the right connector, but has anyone found a solution. I had a Wilson cradle booster, but am wondering if there is a better way of boosting the signal?
