For those of us who subscribe to Google Play rather than Spotify, the Spotify app on the Galaxy Watch isn't much of a draw. Maybe I'm just dense, but I spent ages looking for some third party app that could stream music from my Google Play account, until I discovered this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sapien.android.musicmate&hl=en_US
Basically, it logs into your Google account and lets you download any music you're able to access through Google Play Unlimited, and save it to your phone as MP3s. It costs $4, but you can try it out with 50 songs before you have to pay. Once you've got the MP3s, you can put them on your Galaxy Watch, iPod, burn them to CDs, whatever. I figured this must be safe/legal since all authentication and the $4 payment are all through Google, and besides that the app is on Google's own Play Store, so it'd be sort of dumb if they were offering something that violates copyright or whatever.
I tested it out today and tried downloading 20 songs. I specifically chose music that I had not purchased prior to getting Unlimited, just to make sure that this wasn't some fancy way to download my purchased music library (Google already lets me do that through their desktop app). It was quite fast, and I was able to copy them to my watch and play them while jogging without any issues. I decided to just pony up the $4 since I'll definitely be using this in the future. I've only tried this a couple of times today, but I've got to say that I'm impressed. And given that it costs less than a pint of beer, I'd say it's worth it.
Anyone else try this out? Any issues or foibles I should be aware of?
