Amazon music used to allow me to use my car's microphone to request songs/albums to be played in my car via Android Auto. Now, the screen message confirms my request and opens the music app on my phone, but does not play the music through my car’s speaker. I have the same problem with requests to play music on Spotify. It's a potential safety issue, as it's forcing me to use the car's infotainment screen to play music instead. The Android Auto voice commands for navigation and making phone calls work fine, so it's definitely something wrong with the app.
My phone is a new Samsung S25, but I was having the same problem with my former phone, Samsung S23, which I recently replaced.

With this happening on your previous device and now on your new device it's sounding like a rouge app maybe. Usually to determine if the issue is being caused by a bad app or a device setting or bug we'd ask you to try to do these things with the device in Safe Mode but I believe SM will take too much functionality away for this to give us any real answers this time. This is Google's troubleshooting list.

If your Android Auto voice assistant isn't playing music, try restarting your phone and Android Auto, clearing their cache and data, ensuring your preferred music app is linked in the Google Home app, and checking for updates to the Google app and Android Auto. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Here's a more detailed breakdown of troubleshooting steps:
1. Basic Checks: [1]

  • Restart your phone: A simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. [1]
  • Restart Android Auto: Ensure the Android Auto app and the car's head unit are restarted. [1]
  • Check volume: Make sure the volume is up on both your phone and the car's audio system. [3]
  • Check other devices: Ensure no other devices are playing music that might be interfering. [3]
  • Check Media Audio: Ensure Media audio is turned on in your phone's settings. [3]
  • Check for updates: Ensure your Android operating system, Android Auto app, Google app, and Google Play Services are up to date. [2, 4]
2. Clear Cache and Data: [1]
  • Android Auto: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps & notifications > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache and clear data. [1]
  • Google Play Services: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps & notifications > Google Play services > Storage > Clear cache and clear data. [1]
  • Google App: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps & notifications > Google > Storage > Clear cache and clear data. [1]
  • Your Music App: Clear the cache and data for the specific music app you are using (e.g., Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music). [1, 6]
3. Verify Music App Settings: [5]
  • Linked Music Provider: Make sure your preferred music provider is linked in the Google Home app. [5]
  • Default Music App: Ensure the correct music app is set as the default in Assistant settings. [2]
  • Check for updates: Ensure your music app is up to date. [6]
4. Other Potential Issues: [7]
  • Microphone: Ensure the microphone is turned on and working correctly. [7]
  • Android Auto Compatibility: Make sure your car and smartphone are compatible with Android Auto. [4]
  • Bad Connection: Ensure a stable wired or wireless connection between your phone and car. [4]
  • Faulty App: If you are using a specific app, it might be causing issues. Try a different music app to see if the problem persists. [4]
  • Amazon Music: If you are using Amazon Music, ensure you have the unlimited version and that the app is up to date. [5, 6]
5. Advanced Troubleshooting: [1]
  • Uninstall/Reinstall: As a last resort, try uninstalling and reinstalling Android Auto and your music app. [1]
  • Factory Reset (Last Resort): If none of the above steps work, consider a factory reset of your phone, but be aware that this will erase all data on your phone. [8]
Let us know if any of these things help. If not we'll offer more advice.
