Anyone with experience shooting video and audio quality of interviews?

I want to record clips of interviews as well as my own narrative videos in a variety of locations. I haven't really played with the directional mic function on the Mate. Do any of you have experience using it for that type of thing or something similar?

I am trying to determine if I need to get an external, directional mic. I already have a lavalier for some of it.

Obviously, I can go test it all over the place but I thought I'd call on the collective wisdom.
