Anyway to get a rezound before my upgrade?

I added my mom onto my account. She is using a super old Razr from 2006. She was going month to month on no contract. I used that upgrade for myself and got the Rezound. No data plan added. She now has a two year contact but she isn't going anywhere so it works out in the end

so you can use an upgrade that you have on a regular phone line (no data) to get a smartphone? wouldn't you have to upgrade to a data plan too then?

from my google searches, I was under the impression that in order to use an upgrade from a regular phone on a smartphone, you'd have to upgrade that line to a data plan also. and that cancelling that data plan would also mean that you would have to forfeit the savings you got on the phone buying it at the special upgrade price instead of the full retail price.

please correct me if i'm wrong because this might mean i can pick one of these up too!!
