Aoto delete old message feature 1 way or both phones?

[Android Central Question]

1 of my contacts I text with daily, I assume uses the old message auto delete feature on his Iphone. On my end all our messages delete after approximately 30 days too. I would like to keep the feed, as this is annoying to not be able to go back and reference. Why does this control my phone too, and is there anything I can do to keep my feed, without him changing his whole phone setting?
