On my way back to Android

I've been in the iOS ecosystem for several years now, ever since I got a MMS about 9 years ago that appeared like it was from the 90s. Now, I'm on my way back. It is mostly out of my recent love for Linux and the Gnome UI that I have a desire to be able to get my messages on my Linux hosts, in preparation for a migration away from the all Apple ecosystem. The Open Source community has come a LONG ways in the past decade and I'm ready to be all in. So I am looking forward to the journey.

The first decision was going between Pixel and Galaxy for the phone. I was close to being all set for the Galaxy, then I realized there were several features still exclusive to Pixel that I have gone down that path. The only thing that I think I would be missing that I am sure that I can find something for is the snap up from the bottom corner to get an AI pop. We will see. Maybe I won't miss that. I decided to go back and watch the 1 year old MadeByGoogle keynote. I'm now also planning to be all in with Fitbit and the Pixel as part of that, getting a Pixel 2, maybe getting the Pixel 3 in conjunction. Still debating that.

Why? Apple just isn't getting the AI that I would be expecting these days. The Google story is much more compelling and much more useful to my every day. I just went back and looked at the Pixel 8 announcement from last year and those features are just wow features already. So I'm very much looking forward to the next Google event coming up here shortly to see when I'll be getting the Pixel 9. I was originally planning to go get the Pixel 8 with the one year old pricing out there making it an appealing purchase. But I think that if I'm going to be going in on the system, the Pixel 9 Pro is looking good. Now to figure out what size, regular or XL. I have always been a regular sized phone individual.

I have bought full in on the Apple system, and my family is all Apple yet, so I will have some growing pains to go through. First will be the RCS conversion, hopefully most of that becomes seamless if I follow the process right these days. The bigger challenge is the family set up that my Apple ID is the primary on. Then will be the rest of the smart home conversion. Thankfully just about every piece of my smart home is generic that doesn't rely too much on the HomeKit environment. I really wanted to get video on my TV when there was an event, but that was lackluster and didn't work so well. Back to Roku where I should have been the whole time.

The other killer feature is that Android Auto looks great on bigger screens in vehicles. So I'm very much looking forward to the progress there. The one thing that I have not seen too many articles on yet is the idea of controlling garage doors from the Android Auto side of things. When HomeKit has a garage door opener in it, whenever it is within a radius of the home it allows it to be opened. That is pretty slick. Done via HomeAssistant.

On the watch front, are there any slick integrations between Fitbit and Peloton that I should be on the look out for?

Just seeing another possible question. One of my favorite accessorization features of the iPhone was MagSafe, in particular, MagSafe chargers. Is there a similar capability with the cases I'm seeing to also do the wireless charging? This probably isn't a frequent occurrence and somewhat a novelty to get to do it for me. But thought I'd ask.

I know all of my airtag type accessories I will be moving to TIle. Unless there is something else that I come up with shortly that uses Android devices in the same fashion that the FindMy network does on Apple.

Welcome to Android Central! Thanks for that detailed history -- hope you enjoy the Android/Pixel ecosystem! I'm afraid I don't have an answer about Fitbit and Peloton, but I can tell you that there are a lot of cases designed for Pixel phones that include a MagSafe-type metal circle, making them compatible with most MagSafe accessories. But you should probably test the charging ability, since I wouldn't be surprised if some of the cheaper case manufacturers didn't get the placement quite right.
