Is there a way to back up apps and app data? Is rooting necessary to app data back up?

Helium will back up your apps and data without rooting.

With Helium, google's native backup, dropbox and Evernote all my backup needs are taken care of. No need to root for backup. You do need access to pc to activate helium....

Was going to recommend Hellium as well. Root makes it easier and provides more functionality but probably isn't necessary for your use case.
