App Badge Icons - How to show just badge and not notification ?

I have a ZTE Axon 7 and I'd like to have my text app- Textplus show a badge icon but not have a popup notification in the slide down bar. or the lock screen. I've tried nova launcher and and notifier...but if i disable the notification, I lose the unread count. Is there a work around for this? I'd basically like it to work like iOS. Thanks
