Apps crashing, stopping, and disappearing

I have a Moto E 1st gen with Android kitkat 4.4.4. Lately I have been having a lot of apps stopping and crashing, and some keep disappearing! I've cleared the cache, I've uninstalled and re-installed apps, I've rebooted the phone. Does anyone know why my used-to-be-my-best-friend phone is turning on me?

It might have to do with apps being updated with more current OS versions in mind, which might end up causing issues with legacy (i.e., obsolete) OS versions like KitKat. Are only your 3rd party apps that you install crashing, or also preinstalled/system apps?
