Alright ladies and gentlemen, I like some here and probably more to come just new to the phone and rooting and custom ROMs. I have just done the tunderom and love it but now I want to know what different and better apps are there out there for rooted devices.

Off the top of my head: quick boot, cache cleaner, setcpu, titanium backup, root explorer. Search root on the market and take a look.

quickboot = option to reboot and reboot into recovery
clear cache = self explainatory
titanium backup = allows you to do full backups and move any app to your memory card
screenshot apps = take screenshots
adfree = get rid of thos pesky ads in free ads ( this is worth rooting alone )
Root Explorer = allows you to browse and alter androids file system
Setcpu = overclock your phone (this is only if the rom your on allows it)

You now have the freedom to load new things that come out for other phones, like the new gingerbread keyboard.

I didn't root to just get access to the new programs but to just be able to load things through recovery. Roms, Apps, Themes, etc...

Maybe I should have asked/worded better. What better, more stuff can you do?

You can install apps that require rooted phones. These are apps that can affect the core system, (like AdFree, CacheCleaner, etc...which redirect internet requests and delete system caches, respectively). The question for you is, what do you WANT to do?

I would lean away from AdFree as it can cause funky things, like un-attaching icons and their apps, and that is how some developers get paid.

Where did you hear that? I've never had any problems and I've been using Adfree for a long time.

It happened to me for starters.

I think the main reason would be to not short cut developers their money. I guess this is mainly my personal preference.

Personally I don't care if anyone uses ad-free...if the developers are worried why not release a "paid" or "donated" version of the app so people have the option to get rid of the ads while supporting the developers.

Because making an ad supported version and offering it for free is an extremely effective way to combat piracy. If if you side load the app that you downloaded from a shady mediafire link, the ads are still tied back to the developer and provide a revenue stream.

If i were an app developer i would have an ad supported free version and not offer a paid version for this very reason. If you think about it, there are far fewer people who have rooted phones blocking ads then there are people who have the ability to pirate apps because any android phone, rooted or not, can sideload apps. Only rooted phones can block ads

Not that I want to take this completely off topic, but I *hate* ads. I'm one of those people that has a firefox installation with flash disabled for visiting certain websites because the ads irk me too much.

And when my 5 year old kid plays a puzzle game on my phone and accidentally clicks a link for "flirt with singles in your area" (because it had a heart and she thought it was part of the game), I just really don't want that crap on my phone. Let me give the developer money for a paid version, and I'll be on my way.

The problem, ultimately, is that some apps don't offer paid versions, most likely for the reason you describe. This practice is quite bothersome to me. The most glaringly annoying iteration of this is Rovio's Angry Birds. Not only are the ads annoying and intrusive, they create a significant performance hit that slows the game to a crawl. If the slow down doesn't ruin your game play, the pop up ad will.
I would gladly pay for an ad-free version, but it does not exist (yet).

I am given no other choice but to run Adfree. If I can pay a developer for their app, I will try to. Perhaps developers will catch on and stop the nonsense, but for now Adfree is very high on my "must install" list.

personally, i detest ads. it's also one of the main reasons i rooted. i don't care much for app devs that whine and cry about AdFree (another app too, oh the irony!) and how much possible revenue they're missing out on.
