Cell phone reception in my area is bad (all carriers). That causes the phone to frequently lose reception (expected). The problem is that after losing cell reception it will randomly stop and restart any app I might be using (text, WhatsApp, games, etc), losing all the work done (texts, or progress on a game). Anyone had this experience? Any solutions?

I am on Verizon and I have software number 1.16.617.6, android version 7.1.1 , patch from June 1 '17. No new software update has been made available since my post.

Morty, not sure if you saw my reply below and whether you might have some other helpful ideas on how to go about tackling this problem?

Have you tried to clear the cache partitions? If not try that. If that doesn't work then try a factory reset. If that doesn't work you may have to wait for the next OS update as it is supposed to have Verizon fixes included with it.

Having a signal or not should have no bearing on any app restarting. That would make airplane mode a nightmare. There is some sort of software or firmware issue here. Your best bet is to clear the cache partition as mentioned above and then a hard reset if that doesn't help. I say all of this based on the assumption that you're not using any shady apps or side-loaded 3rd party freebies. That the messaging app will close and not save a message you had been composing, as a draft, is the clincher here. Not every app behaves like that, but in Messages anything you've been composing will automatically save as a draft until you send it or delete it. It'll still be there a year from now if you haven't done anything with it.
