was looking at two apps on appbrain, identity sweeper and an indian cooking app, both look to be real apps, but will not install, and do not show up in Market.

What gives?

Did you go to settings, Applications, and then check the unknown sources box. That might do the trick.

are you saying it needs to be un-checked? Mine has been checked to allow non-market applications since I rooted it.

No it should be checked... so if it is, don't touch it. Sometimes app brain will show Apps that aren't compatible with your phone so maybe that's why (?) I could be wrong but that did happen quite a few times to me when I was on my hero

I have the sweeper app showing up in the Market. The developer is VitaminSoftware. Try a search by the dev's name in the market.

something makes me think that is the difference, I am running 2.3. they may not have updated for 2.3 yet.

Not to sound stupid but curious, cause in my opinion I don't use anymore cause just a extra app takes up space. what is the use of appbrain? All apps in there is in the market and in order to even d/l don't you still get transferred to the regular market to d/l.

When an app is released the author needs to make sure its compatible with the OS version. They might not have updated or tested it for 2.3.
Also keep in mind not all apps are meant for all devices. Remember iheartradio, worked great on 2.1 and below, then the EVO got 2.2 and the app no longer showed up in the market.

I use appbrain to keep track of what apps i have installed. I can access it from my computer, make a print out and keep that handy.
Just in case i wipe my device.
The market does not keep track of your devices (unless its paid) if you hard reset your device. At least not that i know of.
I also use app brain to find apps i want and then add them to the list for future installs. Then at a later date i can sync app brain and the app is there asking me if i want to install it or keep it in the list.

If you are concerned about the amount of memory that appbrain or other apps like it take up, you may not be using your memory very well. Your phone has an 8gb card standard, and it can be updated to 32. Appbrain takes up literally less than 1/1000 of that, maybe 1/10,000, I am not doing the math right now.

Appbrain with their fast installer app completely bypasses the market. I can sit on 24 inch monitor and look at apps, screenshots, reviews etc, click one link and it is on my phone next time I look. combined with their lists of installed apps etc., it is avery useful tool if you want to get the most out of your Evo.

That is nice features then. I haven't used since just after they dramaticaly changed the ui. I don't go do much on laptop so didn't know do that from there as well. No criticism or disrespect intended.

I have used Appbrain since I rooted, it's one of the best tools to have if you switch from ROM to ROM.

Also, I installed CM7 and it's funny how some apps show on Appbrain, but when you try to install them, these cannot be downloaded through the Market. Reason is some of these apps only work with 2.2 and 2.3 is not working specifically for that App (supposedly, I'll get later to that), then the Market locks or in other words it doesn't allow those apps to be downloaded from a 2.3 ROM. This is convenient for the App developers since they can work on 2.3 and not hear any complaints about all the issues their apps have on 2.3

Anyway, I traveled to LA recently and found the best radio station ever (for the music style I like), I found iheartradio on Appbrain and tried to DL through it by going to the Market, it didn't work; then I tried going through the Market App on my phone, the app doesn't even show, it is blocked by the Devs request; iheartradio at that time was not compatible with CM7 or any 2.3 ROM, it only worked up to 2.2 and it was specifically on the App description. Recently the Devs finally released it for 2.3 and now is supposed to fully work with 2.3, but I tried downloading it through with my CM7 ROM just to find out it cannot be downloaded, it's blocked!!! Very frustrating, but found a workaround:
  • Went to my first rooted ROM
  • 'Sprint Lovers' which uses Sense and GB 2.2
  • Downloaded iheartradio, worked perfectly on 2.2 with Sense
  • Backed up this app with Titanium Backup
  • Went back to my CM7 ROM and restored iheartradio using Titanium Backup
  • The app works perfectly with CM7!!!
There is another app XFINITY TV which I found only works with 2.2 per the Devs, but did the same workaround through 2.2 and restored on CM7. The app works perfect on CM7, I don't know if other 2.3 ROMs will have the same success, but is so fast now I'm truly enjoying my remote through my phone, pretty awesome.
