Apps running using up my data

Getting a Atrix and 200Mb plan. I have read many stories of people getting new phones and using 100Mb of data in the first week from stuff running all of the time.

I don't want anything autoconnecting or updating. If I want to check my email I want to manually do it, same with facebook, I don't care to automatically have every post downloaded to my phone.

I will use the phone for these things occasionally: checking email, weather radar, gps, looking up stuff over the internet. That's about it so I figure 200Mb will be plenty if the automatic stuff isn't running.

So what do I need to turn off, and how do i do it?

Thanks (this will be my first smartphone)

you'll have to make sure syncing is turned off you can do it from the power widget or better yet from Motoblur accounts make sure to go into each email you've got and uncheck all syncing. also make sure to turn off background data from: battery and data manager/data delivery/background data and lastly from Location and Security turn off "use wireless networks" I have a 2GB plan and 90% of the time I'm on wifi. otherwise I'd go over within two weeks lol so use wifi whenever possible :)

Yeah, I just went and turned off all of the stuff that you talked about. Before that I noticed that my ATRIX was using a good amount of data in the background. We'll see if this helps. Also, does anyone know a more reliable way to monitor data usage other than the At&t data monitoring? It never seems to be that accurate. Also, if I turn off background data, will I still get Google Voice texts? Thanks!!!

I personally also suffered from my Atrix using loads of data in the background. I didn't know what I left running, but I used over 300 MB in 3 days (and I only had a 200 MB plan! )
What works best for me is 3G Watchdog Pro. With it, I set a daily data allowance and it also tells me what programs used up my data. With the information it provided, it showed me that I had left Google Maps/Navigation on. :'(

Get APNDroid from the market. You can turn carrier data on and off with one tap of the widget. It works very well and puts you in control of when your data gets used.

Let me get this straight, you want to use your data plan for messaging, instead of the carrier's SMS- but you also don't want to use data for your GV texting?

It's one or the other, bro. If you turn data off, you will not receive push notifications for GV, or any other app.

You did not have to do any of that. Just got to settings/battery&data/data delivery/ social applications and check sinc over WiFi only.

So far I have been able to turn "sync over wifi only" on.

Have disabled background data

Also disabled "use my location for google search results".

Also under "location and security" I disabled "use wireless networks"

I have added a gmail account as my motorblur account, another gmail account and a hotmail account but can't find the place where I am supposed to turn sync off for each of these.
I do see that at the bottom of gmail it says "sync now" so I guess I have it set to manually sync? but don't know how i did that if I did

On hotmail I just found that If I open hotmail and go to menu I can select "sync over wifi only". Also turned data push to "off". What is this fetch schedule?

Still don't see any options about the motorblur email account

Thanks
