apps that are killing me

no matter what i do i cant get city id ,maps,and mobile im ,and g mail from running in the background as per the settings>applications>manage applications. i believe these apps are draining my battery . today i put the phone down with 75%battery and didnt pick it up for 4 hrs. when i picked it up the battery was in the red zone . verizon told me to download "advanced task killer" seems to help any thoughts would be appreciated .
i am a long time BB storm 2 user. i love the TB but this battery issue is real . i now have a better appreciation for the BB. it may not have been so slick but it worked as a phone , emailer and texter.

Don't use a task killer. It'll actually drain your battery becasue it'll close apps that auto open, so a circle of open/close happens. Look at the thread titled Juice defender and Blockbuster. We get off track in there on page 2/3 but it'll help you.
