Heaps of apps installed themselves on my A3 and when I uninstall them they remain there with the option to 'open'. They also continue to get updated and the notification appears on my home screen. I am getting numerous notifications every day. How can I fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! Can you give some examples of the apps? If they're all random games, then chances are that you inadvertently installed some adware or malware alongside some other app. If you're unable to uninstall these apps, then you may have to do a factory reset (after backing up all of your important data). After the reset and the Setup Wizard, go immediately to the Play Store and stop any app from automatically installing.
Also, are these apps installing from the Play Store? Open the Play Store app, swipe in from the left, tap Settings>Auto-update Apps, and make sure that's turned off.
