Are all usb chargers the same?

Amperage isn't what kills electronics, it's voltage!

Watts/Volts = Amperage

So as long as it's 5v you should be good in theory. Not sure if I would try a 2.1 amp charger on a phone though lol.

While I understand the electronics Amps/Volts discussion I do know that I bought a generic micro USB charger in the Detroit Airport once when I forgot my BB charger and I ruined a BB Storm. Luckily I was inside a year and they gave me a new one at no cost ("I don't know what happened it just stopped working."). When I went home and used the same generic charger and started having the same issues was when I figured out it was the charger.

IMO The Amps matter a good bit.

Maybe the voltage was out of spec on the charger, but Ohms law holds that amps don't matter.

I've had my Incredible hooked up to my laptop via my Storm1 old usb and it's taken FOREVER to charge. I had like 16% battery life left this morning wehn I put it on around 10:00 and it's been on there the majority of the day and at 3:50 it's only at 51%. Should it really take that long?

It's only charging at 500mah which is .5 amps. The wall adapter that came with the phone is rated at 1 amp. So naturally it's going to take longer to charge (twice as long). I have the exact same setup you're talking about but I don't think it takes that long. Usually I'd be around 65-70% charged after that long.

Does your screen turn off when you have it connected? Also is it in Disk Mode? That might prevent it from charging quickly.

Ok, that's good to know. I guess I need to buy another usb plug for my office then that's rated at 1 amp. I have the Incredible hooked up at my home office today on the usb plug that came with the phone and it's gone from 29% to 33% in the last 25 minutes, which is faster than it was going at my other office with the Blackberry usb.

And I think i had it on disk mode for awhile too and the desk clock on. Didn't think that would affect the charge time as it didn't on my old Storm.

Yes, you can buy those adapters pretty cheap. When I bought my Jawbone Prime a year ago it came with the same thing. I just looked at it and it's only rated at 550mah. I've honestly never used it because I just keep the usb cable hooked up to my work laptop.

You can find links to the adapter on these forums, I've seen some recently but I'm too lazy to search for them.

Amazon and eBay are great places to find those.

been using various BB chargers on mine since i bought it, no issues and it chargers much faster than you all are saying for BB chargers. Mine is like 3 hours max. You have to have other issues.

Are you using a BB charger or a BB branded USB cable? I'm referring to a usb cable. I looked at the specs of my wife's BB Storm charger last night and it outputs 700mah. Whereas the wall adapter that came with the DInc ouputs 1000mah (1 amp).

I agree that something else has to be going on with his phone but I just wanted to make it clear what type of charging we were talking about.

I use a BB branded usb cable at work. Does it make a difference if it's plugged into the laptop directly or my computer monitor? Because my computer monitor has 2 usb ports which is what I use.

(and with the stock HTC cable today I'm up from 29% at 8:56am to 66% now at 11:21, so double the charge in just under 2 1/2 hrs, which I think is normal (since the sticker on the HTC wire says 4 hours to fully charge))

That would really depend on whether your monitor supports USB 2.0. Most likely it does. If you don't get any annoying pop-ups from Windows then you're fine. I know that with my keyboard if I use it's extra USB port a pop-up comes up and says there isn't sufficient power. Most likely you're fine.

neither takes that long, usb for PC or the wall pack charg under 3 hours generally

From memory, when I had an Eris for a few days, it had a special plug needed. Not micro nor mini usb. Had a wierd shape...

Not sure if your Eris came with a special plug...but we've been using a mini-USB charger and it's been working fine.

Mini and Micro are two different styles or plugs. The ERIS had a mini-USB while most newer devices have a Micro-USB.

As far as plugging into a monitor, hub, tower, or latop yes it could make a different. If you plug it into a keyboard or monitor usb spot they may not be powered USB plugs. It that's the case it will take A LOT longer to charge.

I bought a plug from Amazon that mimicked the style of the DINC's OEM charger (seperate plug and cable). It charged my Dinc but while the DINC was plugged in, he screen response was very sluggish. As soon as unplugged, everything went back to regular responsiveness. I got nervous and threw out the plug. Is there a chance I permanently screwed up my DINC and/or battery?

(It said it was 5V output but it wasn't OEM so who knows?)
