Are other charging standards safe?

I'm new to the Pixel & was surprised the charger required a USB C cable. I tested the Samsung Adaptive Charger my Note 5 & tablet used and my Pixel seemed to charge but not "rapidly charging". Got me
wondering if using anything other than the Google charger would hurt my phone. Should I forget about my old chargers?

I believe that any charger would do the job just not as quickly as a dedicated fast charger.

Those Samsung chargers use Qualcomm's Quick Charge spec for the rapid charging on the Samsung devices. The Pixel line does not support that, in favor of USB-C's PD spec. Almost anything other than a legitimate USB-C PD cable and charger should result in a standard charge rate rather than rapid charge. I have a non-PD Anker USB-C charger that does do rapid charging, but it may not be at the full 15W that the phone will charge at.

Thanks for the info. I figured the older charging standards ought to be ok but didn't want to pull a bonehead move and use an older charger/cord with a USB C adapter and damage my new phone

Yup, should be safe. I have an Anker battery pack (well, 2) stashed in my backpack with Google-supplied USB-A to USB-C cables. That worked fine with my Nexus 6p and I don't anticipate issues with the Pixel 2 XL.

my old charging cable for my LG G5 works with my Pixel 2 XL for "rapid charging". Both are USB C, I guess it makes sense since LG is responsible for manufacture of the Pixel 2 XL?

@Joltcola1234 USB-C on both ends - should be fine. USB-A on one end - that could be an issue as it doesn't conform to standards and should NOT be displaying "charging rapidly".

FWIW, I recently purchased these Aukey and CreatePros USB-C to USB-C cables from Amazon that are working fine to facilitate rapidly charging for my Pixel 2 XL, including with this Satechi multi-port wall charger that I also got from Amazon, which has ports that work for both the PD Rapid Charge on my Pixel 2 XL and the Qualcomm Quick Charge on my wife's Moto X Pure Edition (as well as two additional ordinary USB-A ports for other devices):

The G5 cable is normally USB A on one end and should not rapid charge. The charger is USB A also. The Verizon models were USB 2.0 and some other models including unlocked we're USB 3.0
