Are Sprint Epic 4G preorders closed?

TBH, I was a bit surprised to see the strong reception of the Epic relative to the pretty weak introduction of the Captivate/Vibrant.

ATT/TMO had no problems keeping them in stock, even at ridiculously low prices. I think a large part of it is Sprints yearly upgrade program, so there are a lot of Pre owners who are becoming eligible right now. Moreover, a lot of people bought the Pre because of the keyboard, so that might explain why so many are excited about the Epic. On the other hand, ATT has never had a viable android device before the Captivate, and The Vibrant is far and away the best thing on TMO. You would think that with Sprint having the Evo there would be relatively little excitement for the release of a largely similar phone.

I think you said it best with the Pre comparison.

The Pre was a huge hit for Sprint but a year later there is still no successor, so many owners (myself included) are looking for the next best thing and thanks to yearly upgrades why not use it on this.

About the Vibrant and Captivate not being as porpular I think it is due to the carrier. I am not 100% sure but as far as I know Sprint is the only major cell phone carrier that allows yearly upgrades unless you go with a one year contract on another carrier.

Also add in the fact that unlike the other Galaxy S phones this has a keyboard which I think has a huge effect. Besides the Droid there are not that many high end Android devices with a keyboard.

When you add in all these equations I think the Epic is just a good decision by Sprint to release it when Evo is having inventory issues, there are very few high end keyboard Android phones, and many Pre owners from last year are looking for an upgrade.

I think the ATT/Tmobile/ Verizon Galaxy models, while not pedestrian, are just iterations, moderate differentiations from many good smartphones they already offer.

4G is the game changer. It makes Epic an entirely different animal. The other galaxies got well deserved good reviews. the Epic got rave reviews and deservedly so.

I also disagree, sorry!, with the idea that Pre has anything much to do with it. I dont own a pre and don't know anyone with one. They still sold more instincts than Pre. they even sold more high powered wm than pre in the last couple of years. I have friends with iphone who ordered or want the epic

When people say Pre was big, it is kind of like the mel brooks line: "world famous in Poland." No offense to the nifty device and its owners, but it is not even a bump in the market.

I think the epic is its own phenomena based on merit.

No, when I meant the Pre was big I mean saleswise for Sprint.

If I recall before the Evo was launched the Pre had the biggest opening sales of any phone Sprint had previously launched.

"We experienced our best one day of sales and single weekend sales for any phone we've launched in our history," he said. "We sold out of the device over the weekend in most of our store locations. And it happened at a much faster rate than we had planned on. "

Hopefully though Epic can have a big launch as well. These last weeks are gonna go by slow.

I have the Pre and it will soon be my backup phone if the Epic is broken / lost / stolen. I like WebOS, but having to remove all of the patches before every upgrade is annoying. The Pre keyboard is not all that great, the Epic keyboard will be much more usable. The biggest pro is the large high-res amoled display.

I just left a best buy (phoenix, AZ) where I pre-ordered 2 epic phones. They won't know if they will have them on launch day till 1 week out though.

So you might try to pre-order at your local best buy if you are the pre-ordering type.

Sprint claimed that it sold three times as many Evo in the first three days of launch as it sold Pre in the equivalent period. Those kind of claims very often turn out to be optimistic overestimates, and why not they are aimed at the financial markets. they fixed it with a corrected with a subsequent release ( Sprint | News Release ) but Evo appears to have had double the demand that Pre had anyway.

opening sales of Pre were big but then it quickly petered out. not surprising since it had a massive, massive promotion campaign but if you read any subsequent stories the Pre was not a sustained success at all and fell well below exceptions and projections.
Palm says its Pre and Pixi smartphones are selling below expectations and expects earnings to be significantly lower as a result.

I am not saying there isn't an affect from Pre but Sprint sold more windows mobile in that period since pre launch so just as many wm are coming up for renewal (like me),.

No offence, but people who bought winmo probably weren't very techy(though a minority obviously bought them so that they could hack them to death). At least on these forums, there seems to be a ton of pre buyers.
