Are these correct steps to set up Nexus 4 to make/receive VOIP calls via Skype (Skype+Google Voice)?

It took my port about 2 and a half days SMH

Thanks! It ended up taking 23hr 58min for mine to go through!

You can't compare battery consumption between skype and Vonage. The latter doesn't require constant connection.

Comparing skype between iOS and android is fair. IOS skype uses push notification but android doesn't. That's why skype on android is a battery hog. I don't think msft is going to change that any time soon.

OK, but grooveip and sipdroid have also never gone above 1% and they both keep a constant connection.

@donrhummer -- Yes, what you have described works. I have the exact same setup:

1) Ported my existing cell number to GV for $20
2) Already had Skype # with Caller ID set to cell (now GV) number. Unanswered Skype calls forward back to GV number and GV voicemail. Skype unlimited subscription is $30/year and which gets you 1/2 off a Skype online number, so thatn ends up being another $30 for a total of $60/year for unlimited US + Canada incoming + outgoing calls on computer or cell phone.
3) Bought a T-Mo Sim activation kit online for 99 cents, activated it on the $30 T-Mo unlimited data + text + 100 min plan
4) Put Sim into Google Nexus 4, set up Google Voice and Skype app, and am happily enjoying saving about $50/month on my cell phone bill.

Question -- so if you use SMS from the phone, what number do people see the txts coming from?

@donrhummy -- Mine took 23h 59m. I began the port at 5:11pm and received notice from Google of success at 5:10pm the following day.

I have had zero complaints or comments from the people I call on Skype (using either my old iPhone or my N4), and I ask all the time if they can hear me OK, does it sound OK, etc., and my wifi speeds are nowhere near yours. I've been really happy with Skype, but I've heard good things about the Vonage app too and am thinking I may give it a try just for the heck of it.

With respect to the Obi, the call quality is outstanding (I have an Obi202), even with a cheap $19 Vtech handset attached. My Obi is plugged into a switch (not directly into the router), so it's not wireless, although Obi does offer a wireless adapter. I haven't figured out how to configure it to work directly with Skype, so for now, calls that come in on the SkypeIn number are forwarded to my GV number. It would be nice to be able to distinguish the call source, but that's what caller ID is for, right?

@tpd15 -- If I use the GV app on my N4 for SMS, the recipient sees and replies to my GV#. If I use the native messaging app, they see and reply to my T-mobile cell phone number. I have GV configured to use the native messaging app, but for some reason it doesn't. I don't like the GV SMS interface at all, and hate that there's no MMS. Suggestions welcome!

I forgot to mention that I swear I have read that Skype on mobile data works better over 3G than 4G due to the codecs it uses. This does not make sense to me, but I read it on the internet so it must be true, right?:)

That's because both apps are using android os to maintain the constant connection. Check out the battery consumption by android os. It will be much higher than when you don't use those apps.

I found this out the hard way.

I didn't notice that. I'll look next time. Now I'm just using Vonage. The call quality is better and more consistent than any other VOIP app.
