One thing I have a heck of a time photographing even with the Note 8, is the moon at night. I am interested in seeing how the S9+ performs that way.

As others have said, I wouldn't expect too much.

- If you use auto mode, you'll need to use the exposure slider to lower the exposure, or use can use manual mode
- Try using the 2x lens, without digital zoom
- Try using a tripod.

I have had decent success on my S6 in manual mode and especially with Moment 60mm lens.

I think it depends on your requirements. If you want greatest and latest improvements and budget is not an issue you could upgrade to s9. Moreover the plus variant. Or else stick to s8.
