ARE YOU KIDDING ME...? iMessage

So glad I never jumped on the crApple elitist bandwagon.

Just think, if Google (Android) had done this...it would be all over the 6 o'clock news, newspapers, magazines, and blogs touting how "evil" Google is.

No it wouldn't. Look at the Apple forced download of the iOS 7.0 upgrade. Apple gets sued over this. Google forces downloads of the KitKat update to Nexus devices and I have not heard a word about this anywhere on any news outlet.

I am beyond frustrated. I'm a small business owner that communicates often with clients via sms. I have some NHL players that are clients and sometimes we will go a month or two without talking. This whole iMessage issue is making it hard for me to fully embrace and enjoy the android experience. I've already returned 1 note3 within my 14 day window. I refuse to go back this time. Can you please provide me with some piece of mind? At the moment I am not receiving any text messages from many friends and clients. SO FRUSTRATED!!! I've done most of the steps... iMessage turned off on all devices. I've changed my Apple ID Password... I've removed my phone number from my Apple account.

What else to I need to do? Do I really need to give it the 30 days for iMessage to go inactive.

How is this a reasonable way of doing busnes?. Why do "THEY" need to make our lifes difficult.

In all fairness (and yes, I know that has already been mentioned here), your frustration should lie with Apple here.

Only other thing I can suggest is to have tour friends enable sms on their phone. Ios7 turns it off by default. Have them go to settings>messages>then turn on sms. That worked for me on everyone I wasn't getting texts from.

That works great for close friends and family, but with the OPs situation, where you're talking business and/or less frequently messaged contacts, that's really not a viable solution.

Let's be fair here...obviously the vast majority of the folks here (including myself) prefer the Android platform, but the iPhone is a still a decent product...and even if you disagree with that, it's hugely popular none the less. Not everyone that owns one is jumping on an "elitist bandwagon" either...some just don't know any better :cool:

Also, it probably wouldn't be all over the 6 o'clock news if the roles were reversed here...but yeah, it would be all over forums just like this. The fact is the general population, even those using iPhone and the iMessage service, don't fully understand what iMessage is. In a way, that's exactly what Apple wanted with the service -- a completely seamless integration with the SMS system -- but I agree completely that there has to be a better way to switch platforms and remove one's self from the iMessage system. In fact, it should be something that the carriers are able to facilitate for you when you get a new (non-Apple) phone.
 
PITA for switchers but sheer genius for Apple. They made iMessage so sticky as an app that you have to call all your friends and beg them to let you go the way of the green bubble. And if they've eliminated unlimited messages, they now have to question whether enabling SMS for you is worth the cost.

I wish I'd been smart and popular enough to come up with such a solution.
 
I am about to activate an iPhone to test out on my line. I don't want my phone number in the iMessage system as I am not going to keep the phone on the line for long. If I don't put an Apple ID in when I set up the phone, will that keep my phone number out of the iMessage system?

Yes, it won't associate it with your account

just to clarify, the way to make iMessage not associated with a phone number that has an iPhone on it is to not put in an Apple ID when you setup the phone, correct?

Correct, if it doesn't have an Apple ID it won't associate with iMessage

You mentioned that you changed your Apple ID password but have you changed the Apple ID? From my experience, you can disassociate your number from iMessage through iTunes and that works most of the time.

In my experience, it does not take 30 days for iMessage to go inactive. I switch between iPhone's and Android phones constantly and as soon as you disassociate your number from iMessage, regular text on Android, for me, have worked fine.

If you're having problems with any of the above suggestions, which I have in the past, I've just changed my Apple ID to another email address and that clears it up.

Great job on missing the point. No one is shifting blame onto android or frustrated with Android. He's simply stating that it's (iMessage issue) making the experience harder than it needs to be. We're enjoying the phone but it's a pain to have to deal with this too.

Apple needs to take care of this. I'm sure they're aware of it.

Call Apple, 800-MyApple, "I have switched to a Samsung, and didn't turn off iMessage before getting rid of my iPhone. I need you to 'Revoke my iMessage certificate'." It'll take all of 5 minutes, maybe 24+/- hours to work through the system. They say they want to be sure you actually are switching, not just turning off your phone. But, yeah, they could also do a better fix, and it is cruddy, but shouldn't be an issue.

Edit: No AppleID needed, no password, nothing. You'll get an SMS from them to your Samsung, and tell them that code, and you're done.

do you have your phone number still associated with with FaceTime? I was trying everything and then realized I still had it hooked up with FaceTime on my ipad and mac.

Google prompts you that you have an update... You can choose to ignore it. Unless I'm missing something that's how I've always known it.

Also with Google you can always root and change your version / ROM. With Apple you cannot. So even if people upgraded they have no way to go back.

That's not entirely true. On ios you can roll back versions if you have a backup of your shsh blobs. I've done it numerous times when I've jailbroken

My sister had this problem when she switched from her 4S to the Lumia 1020. Now that it has been like two months since she's had the Lumia 1020, I don't think she's having this issue anymore. Typical Crapple.

There have been many crappy issues with Android phones, yet none of them was sensationalized the way Antenna Gate was for the iPhone 4 - for example.

I think you're way off base. Sometimes you're a victim of your own success, but Android OEMs get frequent passes here and their devices are often touted the next best thing even on sites like this one when there are obvious issues with them.

In any case, no one forces anyone to use iMessage. You can turn it off on an iPhone and unbind your phone number on day one and never have to worry about it, ever, if you leave the platform.

Good luck getting your phone number off your Google account, though. They really are desperate to get that Caller ID off and running :-P

Completely wrong. My Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 automatically downloaded the KitKat update without me doing a thing. I woke up, it was downloaded and the same thing happened to every Nexus device where the user wasn't trying to force the download because they were impatient.

It's still there and I haven't installed, it, I don't want it.

The news coverage wasn't because Apple forced the download, but because someone sued them over it. The coverage was of the lawsuit. Should someone decide to sue Google over something similar, they too will get coverage. There IS a bias here, but not in favor of Google; it's in favor of drama.

The iPhone and iOS are certainly decent products; no argument there. But part of the reason they remain "popular" is they pull stunts like this to keep users locked in - by making it next to impossible to leave if you have friends with iPhones.

There have been many crappy issues with Android phones, yet none of them was sensationalized the way Antenna Gate was for the iPhone 4 - for example.
That's because on Android, hardware and software issues cannot be pinned on the same company for the vast majority of devices; with Apple it always can be. If the iPhone messes up, Apple is responsible whether it's hardware or software. It's one brand, one company, so they get coverage - both good and bad. With Android, there are different manufacturers, and yes we do hear about flaws given Android flagship phones have. Heck, the Internet has been going nuts over the rattling power button of the Nexus 5 and its subsequent hardware update.

In any case, no one forces anyone to use iMessage. You can turn it off on an iPhone and unbind your phone number on day one and never have to worry about it, ever, if you leave the platform.
Why do you have to turn it off? Because it's on by default. I don't know if that's "forcing," but I'd say it's close enough.

The hate on Apple in this thread is hilarious. Let me explain iMessage a little. It is for ease of use that they lock into your phone number. It makes it easier for other iPhones to identify if you have iMessage to use the service. There is an issue with the deletion process, but that can be fixed by calling apple. I've had to call google to fix tons of things before so it shouldn't be that hard. Seriously, just call Apple and they can fix it
