As soon as I saw the Google search widget (that I never use) on the bottom of the Pixel launcher home page, and saw that I couldn't remove it, and the time/temperature widget at the top of the page (that I don't care about), I knew that I'd have to do something so that I could have enough app icons on my home page.
So, I installed the Action launcher first, and didn't like that. Currently on the Nova launcher, and love that I can have just app icons on my home page to easily use the apps I that I use a lot. I've also configured the "dock" area at the bottom of the home page so that it's integrated into the page, not divided. Gives me a nice, minimalist look that I really like.
So I'm very happy with the Nova launcher at this point, and don't see any battery impact for having the app on my phone. Unfortunately, can't get rid of the Pixel launcher, though...seems like a waste to carry it around if I'm not using it. So it goes

.
I'd still be using the Pixel launcher if I could get rid of the Google search widget, that's the one that's really a waste of space for me. I can live with the date and temperature on my homepage...
