Are you using DVDfab? Please help.

I am getting very frustrated with converting BluRay discs for my Tab. It takes a bit over one hour to do it and I'm transferring them to the Tab only to discover they won't play using any of the major video players. It's takes a long time to do trial and error.

I actually got it to work once and I *think* I used the same settings only to find out the next one won't play. I think they were iPad 1080.

Can you tell me exactly what settings you use in DVDfab when ripping a BluRay disc?

Thanks very much!!

These are the settings I use for both standard DVDs and BluRay DVDs. BluRay DVDs seem to take a lot longer but I think it's because it has so much more information to encode. In the end the BluRay file and Standard file are the same size but the BluRay file is much crisper (garbage in - garbage out theory). I use the Aiseesoft ripper but I think the settings are pretty much the same no matter what software you use.

Video
Encoder: H.264
Frame Rate: Keep Original
Resolution: 1280x720
Video Bitrate: 2500 kbps

Audio
Encoder: AAC
Channels: 2
Sample Rate: 44100Hz
Audio Bitrate: 128 kbps

I've used higher settings which resulted in bigger files but the same quality - in the end there is only so much resolution that your Tab can handle - anything beyond are 'wasted pixels' (unless you are planning HMDI out).

Hope that helps.

I'm also using DVDfab and ripping from blurays. I am having good results with selecting the iPad setting. The resulting m4v file plays perfectly. I also make sure to select the Edit button and choose the highest resolution the movie ffers under the iPad setting.

I don't know what's going on. I've tried the iPod 1080 setting and it won't play or it plays in slow motion. It plays fine on my computer.

What player are you guys using?

Thanks!

PROGRESS.... Using Aiseesoft (trial) and these settings, it worked. But it doesn't take up the whole screen. I did Avatar and it took up more of the screen. Is this all normal?

You're not talking about top and bottom are you? It should play full screen left and right. Top and bottom will be black because of the ratio of the movie itself. Just checking. Also you should be able to use these settings for any software as they are pretty generic. Don't want to spend more on new software if you don't have to.

The M4V files play fine with either the built in gallery player, or Act 1 Player I have installed.

Yes, top and bottom is black. Thanks for checking. I think I am thrown off because I ripped Avatar and it takes up almost the entire screen, including top. Since I have had about 50 ripping sessions trying to figure this out, I can't remember how I did that or if it cut off part of the movie - it must have, right?

I bought Aiseesoft. It was only $30. What I had wasn't working even with those settings. The Aieesoft product works. I appreciate finding out about it here!

Those settings you posted seem to work. I REALLY appreciate the help!

In order for Avatar to go full screen (top, bottom, left, right) the image was most likely stretched in some fashion - probably condensed - to fit the screen. Glad everything worked out for you!

It's all related to the aspect ratio. The SGT has an aspect ration of 1.6. When you rip a movie, most software will give you the option to preserve the aspect ration or to go with "full screen". If you select to preserve the aspect ratio, and the movie was filmed in anything wider than 1.6, you will see black bars on the top and bottom. If you select the option to use full screen, the software will clip of the left & right sections of the movie so the movie can be shown full screen without warping the picture.

I don't know if Aiseesoft has any options for aspect ratios?

You have to remember that you are trying to take a 12-30GB file and compress it to something about 10 times smaller...that takes A LOT of number crunching. An hour is certainly a reasonable amount of time.

As far as files not playing, you must be picking a file type not accepted by either your hardware or what player app you are using.

With that in mind, NEVER use M4V files, they are just terrible. They are another one of Apple's file types...which are the worst ones to get because Apple thinks everyone is super stupid and has to use things there way.

Use .mp4 (it is accepted by almost every player I've ever seen) or .mkv which seems to be getting there but doesn't have as much support, espeically in Apple.

Once you pick the .mp4 file type, pretty much everything everyone here is saying should work but just in case you don't want to read it, for video keep the 1080 size with the codec of H.264 (or x.264, .264, etc.). You can play with the bit rate to see what still looks good for you but the 2500 suggestion should be good (if you are only ever going to watch on your pad, if you ever want to stream to a bigger screen or HDTV, use something like 5k or higher).

For audio you can use mp3 audio if you like although at the same bit rates AAC (the native mp4) is much much better. I always use the highest kbps possible but 128 is fine for most people. As far as channels go, once again if you are only ever going to watch on your pad or a TV with only two speakers, use 2 channels but if you might ever stream to a TV hooked up to an audio system with surround sound (not virtual surround sound but the actual 5 or more different speaker set up) make sure to use either AAC 5.1 multichannel (640kbps) or keep the Dolby Digital or DTS audio stream (only if your ipad or whatever can play it - probably not though).

By the way these "file" types (.mp4, .mkv, .m4v, .m2ts, .avi, etc.) are actually file containers, they are just a framework to hold the actual files.
