Argh! Waving to change tracks is very inconsistent - Is there a trick to it?

Just when I think I have it - I don't. Is it truly this hit and miss or is there a certain preferred way to get it to work reliably?

Side of palm to phone? Perpendicular? Angled?
Face of palm to phone?
An inch above the phone?
A foot above the phone?
Clapping three times as you pass before the phone?

Maybe it's my screen protector?

Also - is it supposed to respond when the screen is off, laying on a table, playing music? It is, right?

The only consistent response I get is silencing alarms.

Can anyone who is having consistent tell me what you are doing?

(I must look crazy sitting there waving over my phone over and over)

I don't use that much but when I use once in a while it seems to work fine. Even if it misses once in a while I usually get it on the best try.

I wave from one side of the phone to the other in the middle of the phone from 2-4 inches above or in front of it.

I just give a smooth wave, a little fast and urgent. I listen to music all day so I got it down pat. It does work with the screen off, I'm a waving fool..

I do it in more of a slap motion lol. Works about 90% of the time for me.

I was having that struggle too until I narrowed it down to:

A quick swipe aimed as if I was trying to get my fingers right over the screen/bezel too border.
