You missed the best smart thermostat in the article about smart thermostats that don't require a 'C' wire. As I live in an apartment which only has a four wire heating and cooling system, I researched this topic in depth since I could not modify the wiring. I finally decided on the 'Zen Thermostat' which is by far the easiest choice for not 'C' wire systems since it uses replaceable AA batteries as it's power source. It works natively with SmartThings and other smart home systems since I just as Alexa to control it's temperature through SmartThings.
