assign small photo as speed dial?

I have just moved from HTC One SV to M9, on the old phone I could arrange to have a small photo of a contact as a speed dial.
I found this very useful, but can't for the life of me set it on the new phone.
Is it another ' it won't do that on lollipop ' or just me being thick?
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Is there a Direct Dial widget? That's the standard Android one touch dial widget, so I would assume the M9 has it, but I could be wrong.

Holds down on an empty space in the home screen»»Add apps and widgets»»touch where it says widgets and you'll get a drop down»»select shortcuts»»tap the direct dial(phone app icon)»»choose your contact»»jump for joy!!!
