I'm glad that solved your issue. I agree that a vocal Assistant is desired. I use Assistant many times during the day and often when the phone isn't close by. So hearing it respond is important and reassuring. I just don't remember a time I didn't hear it vocally respond so I was befuddled when my wife's P6a didn't. I hope this isn't a Google trend for all Pixel phones.That did it. Wonderful. I owe you big time.
BTW, strangely, the Assistant Voice worked in Google Maps without a hitch.
