Assistant will not act until unlocking phone when using Active Edge (and fingerprint unlock)

When I use Active Edge to open Assistant on my 2 XL , it won't act until I unlock my phone (I use fingerprint locking). It opens and will listen , but won't act until I unlock it.

Is this normal? Does anyone else who uses fingerprint locking seeing this behavior? It makes it much slower than using other methods if this is the intended behavior.

i squeeze and then put fingerprint on immediately, it unlocks instantly and GA asks how she can help

I have face ID on as well, after the squeeze i just look at my phone while talking and it automatically unlocks.
