While I happen to have avoided any issue with my ASUS Transformer Keyboard Dock (B50K) - in terms of the Battery Drain Problems a number of folks have reported in other threads...when I visited my brother this past weekend out of state, I learned he had the battery drain problem (B60K).

This prompted us to both call the U.S. ASUS Support Number at (888) 678 - 3688 together for a solution.

Here, we requested to speak to a supervisor, and indicated (respectfully to the original person answering the call), that I wanted to know additional details on the problem that only a Supervisor at the Center might know. I was immediately switched over to a Supervisor, who was not hesitent to disclose the facts.

We learned more in 15 minutes more than all the posts read in all the threads on this topic combined. There has also been plenty of misinformation, which is why we wanted to make sure and share:

1) There are B50K, B60K, and earlier Keyboard Dock units which contain a chipset that simply does not support the firmware setting in the latest keyboard dock update. It comes down to what chipset was installed in the Keyboard Dock hardware itself when it was constructed.

2) This means that no matter how you set the "MobileDock Battery Saving Mode" setting (checked or not), the keyboard dock battery will not go into "sleep mode"...period. It is not something that can be addressed/corrected with firmware.

3) Based on the results of facts #1 & #2, everyone with a Keyboard Dock will either will have a problem or will not - there is nothing in-between. It does not matter where you bought it, or what model (B50K or B60K) you have - either you unit is immune or has the problem. [Note: this is consistent with the varied reports of different models - some have the problem and some don't]

4) If you have a keyboard issue (which can be confirmed easily by checking the MobileDock Battery Saving Mode in the Settings menu - under Screen), turning off the unit to standby, and then pressing any key to try to "wake up" the unit), and any keyboard touch starts up the connected tablet...you have a defective Keyboard Dock unit. If it stays off - congrats - your battery drain issues should be non-existent - assuming that you are running the latest keyboard firmware from last month or else upgraded recently to Android v3.2. Both updates contained the firmware corrections to assure proper battery operations with the proper chipset in the Dock.

5) If you determine that you have a defective unit based on Fact #4, the good news is there is good news. ASUS klnows about the problem and will repair the units under warranty. This is a relatively painless process of calling the Support number, telling them you have the keyboard drain problem, and following the RMA return process (they e-mail instructions to you - not complicated at all).

6) The "repair" itself is actually not even a repair - its a 15-minute chip replacement and subsequent test process, and then they ship it back to do at their cost. The repair itself is also a warranty (free) service. Make sure when you ship it that it is well protected from damage. It does not need to be shipped with the original box or packing contents.

7) The turnaround time on the chip replacement repair is estimated at 10-14 days - counted from the date they receive your unit. You can ship it any safe way you wish...we chose to speed up the process a bit with FedEx ground (2 day service). FedEx Ground cost him $9.50...and they will get it the day after tomorrow - that is when the "clock starts" for his RMA service. The Supervisor indicated they have turned them around in as little as a week, but do not want to set "unrealistic expectations". As stated earlier, the Supervisor was very open, informative, and helpful in this process.

The fact that this call experience was prompt and virtually pain-free (other than the inconvenience of not having the unit for a short time). The ASUS Support experience we received was very, very good.

For anyone wanting to resolve their battery drain problem, I recommend they proceed to call and follow the RMA return process through ASUS. This assures the correction.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Yep I read this on XDA last week before picking up my dock. My B50 dock works great with the power saving feature.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

i would have never known about this. i tested mine and it is a defective one. thank you...i greatly appreciate it!

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Great post--thanks for sharing.

I don't have a dock yet but may get one. Has Asus insured that newly shipped docks have the proper chipsets? Are they recalling docks in the distribution stream and testing them?

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Thanks for the information! My B60 dock is fine I think. No keypress wakes it but if I tap the touchpad it does "wake up"

Same here, would love to know whether that' s intentional or how it should work...

Also, I guess I have to DL that wiget on XDA to accurately monitor my battery, because when my tablet is connected to the dock it seems to act as if it were connected to the wall... I just hooked it up to the dock for the first time the day before yesterday, used it for maybe two hours, and now i've used it for about another two hour today; yet it says it's only been on battery for 52 seconds and it's still at 100%.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Thanks for posting that. Much appreciated. I have a b4 series needs fixed. Waiting for Asus to get back to me!

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

When I put my device in standby, the keys will not wake the device up. However, running my finger over the touchpad WILL wake it. Does this mean that the dock is not fully turning off, and may therefore be draining power? In my casual, unscientific observations, the dock does seem to be draining rather quickly when not in use...

(FYI, I have dock model B70K)

I really appreciate all the time you put into clearing up the misconceptions surrounding this issue. Thanks in adance for your reply.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

excellent post! Thanks for the info. I have this issue and need to return it. I have noticed on evenings when I turn my AT off with ~80% battery life, the next evening I will be around 50-60! Never could figure it out.

I will be calling them on Monday, thanks for your help. you are certainly a help on this forum.

Called on Staurday ...sending out my dock today ...Great Post ! Thanks again :)

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Sent my TF in for this repair last Monday and it came back today. Great 8 day turn around.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Just got my dock from Newegg last night, it's a B70. I think its a good one as pressing the keys will NOT wake up the tablet. The touchpad is kinda weird, it will sometimes wake it up but not always.

Anyways I loaded the dual battery widget and when I went to bed last night at 11pm it was at 75% for the dock, I checked it before I went to work this morning at 7:45am and it was 70%. This seems pretty normal to me. I did go ahead and shut the tablet off when I left for work, I assume this won't cause the dock to drain at all?

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

FWIW here is the note Asus sent to a number of users on XDA.

“The original design of ASUS Eee Pad Transformer keyboard dock was intended to provide the most user-friendly usage experience, where the keyboard would quickly wake the tablet on a single key press. However, this requires the keyboard to remain in an ever-ready standby state. While this feature was initially well received, we have since monitored feedback requesting an even longer battery life, considering the substantial battery capacity when the Eee Pad is docked.

Subsequently our engineering team has fulfilled this request by providing an additional, optional battery saving mode. This turns off the ever-ready standby state, enabling the keyboard dock battery life to last longer. However, the trade-off is that the keyboard dock now requires a press of the power button on the Transformer Pad to wake it instead. Eee Pad users now have the freedom to choose between longer battery standby (battery saving mode) or ever-ready keyboard wake-up at any time, from the settings menu. We have already implemented this free update for the Eee Pad, and it is ready to use today.

At this point of time, most of the keyboard docks that have been sold and everything in stores today supports this new battery saving option, except those of very early shipments. While the addition of this mode may not be critical to most users, we realized some owners of the earlier units may still desire this additional feature. Despite our best efforts, unfortunately this function is not upgradable on a limited number of keyboard docks and it requires an ASUS engineer to update the device. For those customers that require this optional function, ASUS will arrange an update. Please contact local ASUS service center to make the arrangement.

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to verify if your unit can support the new optional battery saving mode:

(1) Make sure your software is updated to 8.2.3.13 or later; and your mobile dock is updated to 0209. ([Setting]>[About Tablet]>[Build Number] & [Mobile Dock version])
(2) Dock the Pad into the keyboard dock.
(3) Go to [Settings] > [Screen] and select [MobileDock Battery saving mode]
(4) Press power button on the Transformer Pad to make the unit go to sleep.
(5) With the option checked, if your unit does NOT wake up with the tap of a keyboard, the new battery saving mode is enabled and working.
(6) With [MobileDock Battery saving mode] checked,iIf your unit still wakes up by a key press, you have the earlier design.
(7) If #6 is true and you also require the new feature, then please contact your local ASUS service center “

Best Regards,
ASUSTek Computer Inc.

A few notes:
- waking up when touching the trackpad is normal behavior.
- Sometime in May Asus changed the docks to add this support. The serial # on the dock is of the form BmO....,, where m is the month of manufacturer. So docks made before mid May (B3O, B40, and early B5O) may have the issue. Docks after that (B6O, B7O, ...) should not have the issue.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

For the record my B4 dock is back for upgrade. Very quick, efficient and painless. Collected within 24 hours. We'll see how long it takes to get back from the Czech Republic (to the UK). This thing is getting to see more of Europe than I am this year!

Nice! How's it working now? Mine's back in Grapevine, Texas as of Monday 8-15 (and I'm sufferering withdrawals - didn't think I would...). What I don't like, is that they said to send both the TF & Dock back (both are B4 models). I even spoke to a supervisor and was told Repair wanted to make sure both were upgraded... Not sure if I believe them, but I would like to have them both upgraded if that is really what is going on. Anybody else have to send both back?

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

Haven't formally tested battery drain yet, but it sleeps properly now, it would seem.

Re: ASUS Transformer Battery Drain Problem - the FACTS and SOLUTI

My brother's unit came back in great shape - works perfectly, and the drain issue is gone.

He was told to only send back the Keyboard Dock.
