AT&T 64 gb exclusive

While having choices are great...you're talking about 360 hours of music to listen to within a span of 16hours if encoded at 320kbps. If you were ripping to .wav or converting to FLAC, it would be pointless considering the audio quality of a portable device isn't all that great anyway.

Exactly. I have 100gigs of music, and rarely listen to most of it. If I wanted to fit it all on a device, it would be on an iPod Touch set to convert it all to 192 kbps.

Call me a music noob as i only have 120songs on my evo lte, but what difference does the bitt rate make? ._.

I'm not understanding how they make more money on a model of a phone by limiting it to one carrier instead of having it on all 3, unless you're saying the people who want 64GB are going to jump ship to AT&T because of the exclusivity.

I don't see that happening and judging from the outrage in various comment sections and even some in this thread it looks like it has put some people off from buying the phone. I'm sure AT&T will get a couple new customers but nowhere near enough if it had been on all 3, particularly Sprint. Their customers seem to be the most upset. I'm upset because I have Sprint, but such is life.

Att pays for exclusivity. The market for a phone with 64 gigs is very limited. Rather than building several different models with the 64 gigs, they'll build the one for att, save money there, and make money off att.

Meh. They shouldn't of even bothered with that version then. Hopefully they make enough profit off of it in sales but I somehow doubt it.

Well, for the purposes of these forums, and specifically this thread, "most normal users" can suck it. I'm on Sprint and will not purchase the 32GB version. For my wife or my kids? Sure, 32GB is fine. Not for me. I think this slightly flies in the face of one-device-on-all-carriers.

And to give it to AT&T exclusively? Come on HTC! If you're going to make this mistake at least do it with Sprint. They've been your best buddy and partner forever. AT&T doesn't care about you. They don't have any loyalty to you. Come on over here, baby. Sprint'll take care of you. They'll make it all better. They helped make you, with the OG EVO. Remember that? That iconic device that you haven't been able to replicate since? Yeah, you remember.......

Completely agree, I waited for a great built Android device from HTC, when this phone was announced with 64gb of internal memory I was excited as ****. I want the extra storage, I will not buy the 32gb version, screw the every day user, HTC can take a flying **** and a rolling donut. They just lost my business. HTC wonders why they are loosing money, kissing AT&T's ***. They didn't learn by giving AT&T the exclusive on their last HTC one+, the phone did **** for sales, so bad they are dropping it I think. I hope this phone ****s before it hits the market that is how pissed off I am. Now I know why I support Samsung, they don't bend over for AT&T or anyone else. Looks like I'll be buying the better device with the better camera, the SGS4 with 64gb of internal memory and sd card support with huge removal battery with tons of innovation. Thank You Samsung. What Was I even Thinking????

The cost for the extra memory is miniscule. Its pure profit for them.

Of course we don't NEED 64 gigs, but people still want it. I don't need an app that lets me change the color of my notification light, but I like having it. Most features and apps on today's smartphones aren't added because they're needed, but because people want to have them. If you want 64 gigs, you should be able to get 64 gigs w/o having to switch carriers.

I'm probably a bit of a broken record, but I just don't understand the strategy here. HTC has bet the company on this phone. If it isn't a major success, they're probably done. It's basically Palm with the Pre. So if that's the case, why close yourself off to people who are willing to take a chance on you? I say this as someone who had an EVO Shift and kept it for less than a year, because it was a complete disaster of a phone. Even with that experience in my head, I was willing to look at the One, because it has features (Zoe in particular) and build quality that I find really intriguing. But you simply can't take advantage of Zoes in the way that I'd want to, and have all the music and apps I want, with the 32 gig version of this phone.

HTC has got to get as many people as possible using the One. They've got to get people out in public showing it off and telling their friends about it. They simply don't have the advertising $ to play with Samsung and Apple, so it's critical that they generate a huge amount of goodwill from the public to make up for these financial deficiencies. They're blowing it. It's looking at the short term, up front bottom line $ instead of what's good for the long term health of the company. Whatever money they get from AT&T won't buy them the positive PR and loyalty they'd get from people on other carriers using these phones. I just think it's an example of why in a few years they probably won't be here. It's sad.

I'd argue it's a smart strategic move because the market for 64GB phones is relatively tiny. It doesn't make a lot of sense to invest a lot in what will be an extremely low volume product.

But that market still exists. When you're a company on life support and people are highly interested in your product, you can't afford to alienate your future customers by making exclusives and that's why the people that are upset feel that way. You keep talking about it from HTC's perspective and not looking at it from a consumer standpoint, HTC is the one trying to market a phone and get out of Chapter 11. Now people are upset because they would have to go to a carrier they otherwise may not want to go to just to get the phone they planned on getting. And you want to know what's going to happen to those sales that are left on the table because of HTC? Well I'd imagine a good chunk of them are going straight to the S4. So that means HTC is practically giving money to Samsung, a brand and phone they're trying to compete against.

HTC needs all the support and goodwill they can get right now and they're not going to get it from the small, yet very vocal minority. There's nothing smart about it.

I'm going to say that the other carriers didn't want it. It's a small market and they probably didn't want to worry about dealing with multiple sizes, colors and stuff for an HTC phone. HTC phones haven't exactly sold like hotcakes over the last few years. We should probably be thanking AT&T for being the carrier that gives us the option.

Quick, name me the smartphones on the market that come preloaded with 64 GB of memory.

(the correct answer is the iPhone and the htc one x+. No other manufacturer sells a 64gb phone in the us. Samsung almost did, but canceled it.)

Well then I suppose it's a good thing Samsung and other manufacturers allow for the use of Micro SD now isn't it? You and HTC can keep trying to pass off the minority as insignificant if you want, that's a good way to treat customers of any group no matter the size when you're well on your way out of business. Maybe they'll finally see the error in their ways when they're no longer around.

I don't even care about not having a 64GB version as 32GB is more than sufficient for me, but obviously some people need more than that and a dying company trying to stop the bleeding that's leaving money on the table and pissing consumers of any margin off isn't smart, no matter which way you may want to try and spin it. Sorry.

Well, sure. But one of the unique and killer features of the One is the Zoe system. From what I've read, when you make the highlight reels, they're .5 gigs each. So if you actually use the best feature on the phone, you're looking at a space crunch with 32 gigs pretty quickly if you keep music and other stuff on the device like I do.

You're right that high storage phones are somewhat of a niche market. But the One is kind of a niche device at this point. So why limit yourself?

Put yourself in HTC's shoes. Do you really want to spend the time and money adding devices you know won't sell?

Also, Zoes are about 500 mb for ten of them, which isn't too bad considering what is being captured.

It's not spin. The people that want sd cards are a tiny minority and wouldn't have an effect on HTC's bottom line. Further, Google has deprecated sd card support in android, so if htc was to implement it it would be a janky solution that is less than ideal. You really need look no further than googles decision on the matter for the reason why the lack of sd is irrelevant.Google has spoken on the matter, and HTC is one of the few that's actually listening. That and the market just doesn't care.

To make it simple .

Higher bit rate = higher quality = larger file.

4min song in 320kbps = 7-10MBs each.

192KBs you looking at a 3mb file

Does this mean the 64gb model won't be available unlocked? I could understand having only one carrier lock 64gb phone, but to limit the features on a full priced unlocked phone wouldn't make me very happy.

The Dev edition is unlocked and has 64GB. Only problem is it doesn't have T-Mobile's HSPA AWS frequencys but I believe it will work with T Mobile's LTE.

On Sprint too. And 32Gb isn't enough for me either. If Sprint doesn't get the 64Gb version then hello s4. As much as i hate that physical home button, at least Samsung will be making the 64Gb version on all carriers.

We have yet to hear anything from any US carriers about GS4 options and I suspect we won't ever see a 64GB GS4 on any US carrier unless its imported. AT&T has advertised it as $249 pre-order on 4/16 so unless that is a 32GB model and that is their plan its the 16GB version for more than a GS3 16GB and if we are lucky maybe we will see a 32GB later on, but given AT&T's GS3 we never saw anything above 16GB

Verizon has a 16/32GB options for the GS3 but you only get 16GB GS3 in the stores and have to order the 32GB GS3 so will we even see the 32GB GS4 in the store, will it launch at all? I am partial to getting an developers edition GS4 32GB from Samsung directly so I can remove the crapware an be unlocked.

I was considering the HTC One, but I have concerns about its camera quality and software and it would require a carrier change (not that it would stop me) but it gives reason for pause.

We do have to consider that none of the other US carriers were a) sell the 64GB version at all, b) willing to guarantee enough 64GB versions being ordered or sold, c) HTC could in some off chance whacked out method sell you an unlocked phone on another carrier with 64GB but I doubt that would happen.
