I've been with Verizon since the AirTouch days and don't plan on leaving but I now have the opportunity to purchase an AT&T branded Note 2 from a friend. Is this something I will be able to activate on the Verizon network?

Short answer no.
Long answer nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

LOL. Seriously Verizon runs phone calls on CDMA and AT&T is GSM. Completely different radios. So no, it's not possible .... though you could bring a Verizon Note 2 to AT&T with some finagling.

Even with cdma phones, Verizon does not allow activation of phones not in their database, so you can't get a sprint phone on Verizon either.
