I’m with sprint and finished the update. It looks like we have a beta version of being able to use data and talk on the phone at the same time if you['re] not on WiFi.

When were we not able to do that?

Sprint gave the note 8 calling plus with the update. Also the signal bar has changed.

for better or worse? don't care about calling plus as much as I do the aesthetics of my device.

still nothing here in WA and on Sprint. rolling out in waves apparently.

It's bars now. I'm in Virginia and my speed has gotten better. Speed test had 52Mdps down.

Is that a Sprint limitation? I've had simultaneous calls and data for years with both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Long story version....


If you are unable to use Voice & Data on a call this could be a CDMA limitation.

GSM Carriers (AT&T / T-Mobile) – Both can use voice and data at the same. Either on HSPA or on LTE (using VoLTE).

CDMA Carriers (Sprint / Verizon) – These carriers can only handle voice or data. Not both at the same time… Unless using VoLTE. Verizon currently has VoLTE whereas Sprint doesn’t. You may be asking – why is this? My old phone did this... which I am sure it did. A more detailed explanation is below.

The older phones had two CDMA radios put in them (such as the S3 on Sprint). One dedicated to voice -- another dedicated to data. Therefore you could do voice and data. GSM has always been one radio because that one radio can do both tasks at the same time. They got around it on CDMA by simply adding another radio in there and dedicating each one to one task.
Now they're getting rid of that second CDMA radio. So therefore you can only use talk, or data -- not both at the same time. Now if you're using VoLTE for your calls it will allow voice and data since the call will be going through LTE (as data) so it is technically then all data which would bypass this restriction.

I hope it still looks good. I wouldn't put it past Sprint to crap up an otherwise gorgeous device with their garbage. Speed is good but won't help me out here. I have a much better signal with the N8 though.

Thanks for the explanation! I never realized some carriers' customers were living with that restriction.

To be honest it's only Sprint at this point in time. AT&T / T-Mobile have been able to do it. Verizon has VoLTE now so voice and LTE works. Sprint doesn't have VoLTE yet so that's why they're still stuck in the past.

You know action memo is basically part of the new S Notes right? If you have a phone number, web address, email etc in a note you just hover over it with the s-pen and it'll give you the action according to what it is.

Not sure why people are still side loading the old apk.

Nowhere near as functional, sorry, action memo is far superior in functionally to the lame features of s-note. If you've never seen the difference you wouldn't understand.

I've seen the difference. I guess I just don't utilize it other than just to highlight text and provide the proper action for it. I never really created a contact from it and what not.

Just installed. No problem for me so far. Crop to fit in YouTube still works as well.

I'm wondering if any changes to battery efficiency. I woke up around 6am with about 55% and checked, downloaded and installed the update and only used the phone lightly today with a call or two, a little browsing and even used map for a moment and 2pm I'm at 41%. Maybe I'm imagining the phone holding battery better since it's only been 8 hours.

I am in Hanson, just south of Boston, in AT&T. I got it.

Damned, we're almost neighbors... I'm in Plainville! Until my back surgery, I drove to South Shore Hospital every morning... serviced their Radiology equipment for a contractor. Small world?

...and of course because I checked just after midnight last night and got nothing, I have to wait until just after midnight tonight to check again... stupid rule!!!

Just switch to manually set date/time and roll the date up, works like a charm and no more waiting
