AT&T One X won't receive texts periodically

Starting a few days ago (after my phone was reset due to signal being lost randomly in the middle of a 4G LTE area) my phone stopped receiving text messages and about 2-3 hours later I would get an abundance of texts from that time period. I'm using Handcent SMS and I am not rooted. Any ideas on what I can do? I'm going to call AT&T once I get out of class today.

Maybe you should stop using handcent (disable it in Settings), and default to the standard Text message app, to see if the problem is the network or the app.
You can't complain to AT&T if its handcent's fault, and they are going to want you to do the same test.

This is part of the, pretty much standard, att radio issue. I have noticed that it seems to lose connection less if you don't keep bt on all the time.

But losing connection after being in bad signal areas, for "some? time, is usual for att. The bars all look normal, but the data signal will be missing. Usually toggling airplane mode will bring it back. I manually turn airplane on when I am at work for this reason. In my experience, all att phones do this, and you HAVE to deal with it manually.

But losing connection after being in bad signal areas, for "some“ time, is usual for att. The bars all look normal, but the data signal will be missing. Usually toggling airplane mode will bring it back. I manually turn airplane on when I am at work for this reason. In my experience, all att phones do this, and you HAVE to deal with it manually.

First, bluetooth is built into the WIFI chipset and has nothing at all to do with cellular radios. Having Bluetooth on doesn't hurt or help your AT&T connection.

Second, text messages do not come via your data connection. They come via the signaling channel of the Cellular Calling channel (the same channel used to tell your phone it has an incoming call). (MMS messages may be offloaded to your data connection in future versions of LTE, but neither AT&T nor Verizon are doing this yet. Eventually EVERYTHING will go via LTE).

This problem (no text messages) has never happened to me on 3G in all my years on AT&T, and I'm sure its just a teething problem on At&T's LTE, or a cell hand off problem.

I found out that if I turn Airplane mode on and off that I'll get my text messages back, it's only a temporary fix though. And being that I'm in college lectures all day, texting is very important to me haha.

I am merely stating that keeping BT off seems to help.

Also, I only mentioned the data signal missing as an indicator of the problem, not that texts needed it to work.

I am having the same problem, mine started about 2-3weeks after buying the One X. I tried trouble shooting through ATT and eventually got a replacement device. I am still having the problem, and the problem seemed to coincide with my city getting LTE service. Anything else to try or can a fix be expected in the neat future, or should I just go to the S3 or other device?

I figured out the cause for my phone to not get messages. I had Juice Defender installed and apparently whenever my screen was off it would turn off my data and not allow messages through. Disabled it a few hours ago and haven't had the problem since (probably jinxed myself with that). Also when I wasn't getting messages, sending a message to myself seemed to allow the other messages to get through. It's as if the messages were stuck and just wouldn't push through.

Edit: Yep, I jinxed myself. I'm going to call AT&T and ask them to reset my messaging service and see if that helps with anything.

im having this same problem. for some reason i won't get any texts around 10-10:30pm...and then around midnight ill get a flurry of them.

I am still having the problem on my second one x, I guess I am going to have to trade for the S3. I wish I could wait for the one x +, but my 30 day period is almost up. O well, would love to stay with HTC, but this problem cant be ignored.

Try out Ghostly SMS from the play store. So far it's been working and I've been getting all of my messages all day.

i had ghostly sms and so far whatever is sent to my phone makes it into my inbox. no idea what's going on, but this happens every night between 8-10

I was missing calls as well. I went ahead and got the S3, no problems so far. Besides the screen not being as good as the One X, everything is fine. I hope to return to HTC on my next phone.

Hopefully the jelly bean update fixes this, if not I'll probably end up rooting or getting the next nexus. There's more and more people having this issue as of last week.

Well it was not the One X that was the problem, I encountered the same thing on my S3, I guess it is something with ATT. Strange though that no one on my family plan is having problems. Not sure what to do now, would have just rather kept the One X, too late now though to exchange again.

Not as much as before but it's definitely noticeable in the middle of the day. Happens every 30 minutes after about 2pm.

Are you in an area being upgraded to LTE perhaps?

If you are in low signal areas, ATT modems do not deal with recovering from extended no-signal times reliably. This is not device specific, but how ATT seems to have their modems stop searching for signal "after some time" presumably to keep your battery from draining rapidly when no/low signal. Toggling airplane mode should kick start things when you stop receiving items, but could the initial cause be a period of time where it cannot get a signal?

To avoid this issue, I toggle airplane mode every day before entering my work building, and then turning wifi on only. Otherwise, I will get what you describe by lunch time. My wife got it with her iPhone when at her work, due to being under the main TV transmission towers... there was a strong signal, but the data would usually not be able to stay connected due to all the interference... and even though the signal meter would show bars, it was not actually connected or trying to connect. We briefly had Verizon for a few months, and this same behavior did not occur. However, I STILL had to do the airplane thing on VZ, or my battery would die before lunch due to the darn thing NEVER stopping trying to connect. Maybe the carriers have to pick their poison here.

Anyway, if you are in low to no signal areas, try toggling airplane mode (for testing if nothing else) to see if you can avoid it with a little manual switching, Don't put your phone in metal filing cabinets either (wife did this, got what you describe )
