AT&T Switch from BlackBerry to Android... Automatic?

I have a BlackBerry on AT&T for work and am interesting in replacing it with a Nexus One. The question I have is can I just drop in the SIM card or do I have to go through the hassle of contacting my work to have them change the provisioning from BlackBerry data to non-BlackBerry data on the account?

Technically it will probably be fine since the BB data plans are essentially super sets of the standard data plans (standard data plus BB APN access). However, at&t seems to have been very picky about which data plans are used with which devices recently.

I switched mine (from iPhone to "smartphone") yesterday. But it was only because I had to move my iPhone to a transferred line to be bundled with my account for my wife. The CSR simply asked what I was replacing my phone with, of course had no idea what a Nexus One was, and then gave me the whole "we cannot be responsible for your device and we're never going to help you because it's not an AT&T phone" disclaimer. (Which is kind of funny, because they don't support the iPhone, either. They just make you go to Apple.) But they do seem to be rather picky in verifying the phone to data plan matchup.

I assume it would work (as suggested above), but I wonder if they see a large increase in non-BIS/BlackBerry data if they would question you.

I went from a Blackberry Bold 9700 to the Nexus 1. I just popped my bb sim card into the N1 and all is good. I do switch between the two phones on occasion which is why I still maintain my bis account. If you go this route keep in mind that all email that is deleted on your android phone is still in bis and will be downloaded to the Blackberry, resulting in a flood of emails. Since I am using my N1 almost exclusively I was thinking about changing data plans, until I just saw that ATT is changing the rate plans. I'll stay with what I have until my contact runs out, then I might switch to Sprint.

I read somewhere else that the iPhone (with the 4.0 beta) no longer works on the BlackBerry data plan, so yeah something is up. I'm guessing they upgrading their system backed to detect these things better.

Here is the deal, if you want everything to work properly on both devices you need to call and switch plans every time you switch phones... While you can use the iPhone plan on the blackberry you will not have access to data... you can however use the blackberry plan in the iPhone but... AT&T will nag you with messages saying you are not on the correct plan and eventually force you on it.

I posted this on the Captivate board, but this thread started me thinkning . . . I am still in my 2-year contract with AT&T with a non-smart phone. My wife has a Blackberry and is available for an upgrade. However, she can only use Blackberry with her work. Can we get AT&T to "upgrade" her phone to a Captivate, then just put my non-smart phone sim card in the Captivate and continue to use her BlackBerry? Will AT&T automatically cancel her BlackBerry Enterprise associated with her phone number/sim card and switch to a standard data plan, which would mess up her Blackberry, or course?

Why not just use her upgrade and get yourself the Captivate *my sister used my dad's upgrade and got one after she played with mine* and reverted her BB Plan over to the old unlimited plan. Since you don't have a plan, you will be stuck with getting the newer plan of 200 gb data for $ 15 or 2 gb of data for $ 25, unless you can talk to someone about hooking you up with the unlimited data plan for $ 30 a month. But if you did upgrade hers and put your sim in the Captivate ATT will probably add a plan for you automatically. So either way since you do not have an unlimited plan, you will have to get one of the new limited plans. Even some users that had the older $ 20 unlimited plan had to take the newer limited because Att said No *a guy tried to do that this past sunday when I picked up my captivate and he wanted the captivate as well* he stormed out with out buying one but then came back a couple of hours later and bought the captivate and got the new plan lol.

Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie ~ Went to the AT&T store today per your suggestion and now I have my new Captivate! They let me use my wife's upgrade, and said her BB package wouldn't be affected. Just $199, so contract breaking fee. They switched my SIM card there and walked out with it up and running.
Thanks for the advice. Love the phone!

Hey powelgs,
No problem I am glad that you are loving the captivate. I am loving mine even more as well but still trying to get used to the whole touch screen keyboard lol. Which data plan did you end up getting?

Cheers,
Charlie

my daughter wants to transfer from her att bb curve to a captivate. can she just move her sim from the bb to the captivate? from what i am reading on here it looks like it will work. we do not want to extend our contract another 2 years. my wife has until may, then we plan to move to sprint and get a better rate for what we are paying for.

If you already own the device or are willing to purchase the device full retail (or used from a third party) then yes you an do that without extending the contract. You may still need to all customer service to get the right data plan provisioning, or it may just work.
