AT&T wouldn't sell it to me

I think the confusion is with Numbersync which allows the watch and phone to "appear to be the same number" when calling or texting even though they are two different numbers. The watch MUST be issued its own number, which AT&T charges $10 per month, regardless of what any rep told you.

No!!! The confusion is with the lines. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 on a line. I told them that I wanted my Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Gear S3 Frontier to have the same number. They told me I could do that with Numbersync. They never said the watch must be issued its own number.

I give up!!!!! Sometimes it doesn't pay to try and help someone!!

Yes. They don't understand that this is how numbersync works. The phone and the watch must have their own number for this to work so it requires two phone numbers. :D

But you don't have to have two "traditional" cellphone lines to add the watch (and it's own number). A customer with one line of service can walk into ATT and add the watch to their account, for $10/mn. So you will have one line of a "traditional" cellphone service and another "wearable" line of service.

I give up too. If you find it possible to not have a phone number for the watch and another phone number for the phone, then let us know. I'm out of this too.

You need to look up how sim cards work. It is impossible for a network such as T-Mobile and AT&T to issue two sim cards using the same number. It's just not possible for them to do. Yes, the watch has an E-Sim but it's still a sim.

What part did you not understand? I never said you didn't have to have a number for the watch. I understand the watch has it's own number. There was some confusion as to people saying they had to have two lines of CELLPHONE service before the WEARABLE line could be added to their account.

Example, I have one cellphone number. I walk into the store and add the watch (wearable) to my account. In effect that will create another number on my account. Now I have two lines of service, my cellphone and my wearable. But you don't have to have two cellphone numbers, you know those devices you talk, text and surf the web on, before you can add the wearable line (number).

BINGO!!!!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY. I swear these people on here don't get it.

Again, the watch has to have it's own line of service so that it has it's own phone number separate from the phones line of service. This is all we are saying here.

When I had my Gear S activated on T-Mobile, I could use the watches sim in my phone and my phones sim in my watch because they were both mobile lines with cellphone numbers.

I understand how numbersync works. Numbersync lets you have the same number for your phone and the watch (Gear S3). If your phone and the watch must have its own number then numbersync is pointless. There is no point in having numbersync if you can't use the same number for your phone and the watch. Who wants to have two different numbers? It doesn't make any sense.

Good luck with this.

Chrisallen3285 why are you arguing with Nexusgirlx but all you are doing is reiterating the same thing but in your own words. The OP was upset about att saying that an additional line had to be activated in order to purchase the watch. I know for a fact that a "line of service" is required for the "LTE" variant to work as designed. Without active cell service then the lte verison is no better than the Bluetooth counterpart. Period! So if the confusion is about the term, traditionally phone or data or wearable line then everyone is correct! OP I'm sorry to hear that you are required the activate another line of service but if you are willing to pay the full purchase price of the watch then cancel the new line of service the next day. That would be what I would recommend if you must have the lte verison and don't want to wait for another option.

Why am I arguing with NexusgirlX? Because I know what I'm talking about. If any of you were paying attention you would have known that I already have a line of service. As I said about 100 times already I have active cell service. I'm not confused about anything. Y'all are the ones who are confused.

You are right.

Re: AT&T wouldn't sell it to me

The following applies to AT&T. The Gear S3 Frontier LTE can work without adding a second number as long as the phone and watch are paired and within bluetooth range of each other. NumberSync is not involved. But when the watch and phone are not near each other, then the watch functions in a limited manner and is not connected to the network, no call forwarding, no notifications, nothing until within range of the phone the Gear is connected to. The purpose of NumberSync is to take the e-SIM that the Gear S3 LTE Frontier has built into the watch and to emulate the phone it is connected to, either within range which at this point is via bluetooth, and away from the phone and is in stand alone mode and operates via the network. Say you leave the phone at home and have just the watch. The watch acts like the phone and uses the phone's number to receive and send texts, calls, notifications, etc. Senders and receivers don't know whether it is your watch or your phone. NumberSync is part of the service you pay for having the connected watch. It requires an additional number that piggybacks on the primary phone number. Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Re: AT&T wouldn't sell it to me

ehosey2 you are exactly right. I went through the same deal with the Urbane 2 LTE. You are technically adding a second wearable line for the watch. prior to numbersync it was a second number. now it is the same but numbersync converts it on their end to tie into the same number. word it how you want but it is a second dedicated wearable line for the watch sim for $10 bucks a month through ATT.

Yep. I just did this last Sat. I have number sync activated but I can turn it off and the dedicated number for my watch will be the one that shows up on caller ID. It is a separate number and line for the watch.

As the OP, I was trying to get clarity on whether or not I needed to buy a phone line in order to buy a watch and the line for it. In other words, I just want one line, exclusively for the watch. The S3 is only compatable with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. I don't currently have service with any of them and changing my cellphone service provider isn't an option. So my watch line and my phone line will be on separate carriers.

I can walk into a T-Mobile store, buy the watch and a line of service for it, which will cost $15/mo. But their coverage isn't so good, so I was prepared to pay more in order to get AT&T. I thought the most it would be was the cost of their cheapest smartphone plan, ~ $35-40. But the store wouldn't do it, they insisted I needed to buy both a smartphone line and a wearable line from them. Is that correct or were they misinformed?

For AT&T, that sounds correct.
