Audio issues

I am having intermittant audio issues, occurring about 75% of the time right now. I got the phone on launch day and other than some occasional random reboots, I had no issues for the first two weeks or so. I am pretty sure I had not added any new apps in the two days before the audio problem started happening. A bunch of apps did get updated a short while before it started, though. I remember hitting update for 11 apps a couple of hours before the issue started. I didn't pay much attention to what those apps were when I hit update.

My phone is rooted but has not been ROM'd. I have not chagned the clock speed or voltage. I had installed Volume+ and ran fine with it for nearly two weeks. When the issue occurred, Volume+ was the first thing I uninstalled. The phone was fine for a day and I thought I had cured it, but then it happened again. This time when it happened, I had just installed Mobo Player so that I could view videos my wife had taken with her iPhone and e-mailed to me. After that install, no audio would come from the rear speaker using any app. I uninstalled Mobo Player and the phone was fine for a few hours and then it happened again. This time it was the original, intermittant problem where the audio sometimes was fine, other times stuttered, and other times cut out completely. It happens mostly with rear speaker. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. Occurs with Google Music, Power Amp, Sirius XM, Tune-In, Pandora, Netflix, DroidTV, the built in video player, games, navigation, and more. It doesn't make a difference if the audio is streaming or from memory. So far, the phone ringing or notification sounds don't seem to be affected even while it is having issues with other audio sources.

I have also had some issues with both the earpiece and rear speaker during calls, but only a few times. Switching to a bluetooth headset or wired headphones allowed me to hear while on a call. Switching to headphones when it happens playing media also allows me to hear until I unplug to switch back to the rear speaker.

When it occurs, the phone usually gets sluggish. Sometimes it freezes for a while then wakes up but is still very sluggish forcing me to shut it down. I have avoided battery pulls in this situation since I am afraid of what that might do to the phone. I just wait for it to wake up and then shut it down. Once in a while the phone will get very sluggish and reboot on its own. Most of the time the issue starts again after the reboot as soon as I start an app that uses audio.

I read that some people are only having music stuttering when the screen is off. The screen on or off has no effect on my issue.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? Anyone know if this is a hardware or software issue? My guess is it's software, but I am no expert. If it is hardware, I want to exhange it for a new GNex soon. I really don't want the hassle of setting a new phone up, but I will if this is a hardware issue. I have not done a factory reset for this same reason (setting everything back up). I also don't want to trade this phone with this issue for another that might be worse.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a program that is taking up a lot of CPU? Does your battery drain faster than you'd expect it to? To me it sounds like there's something process wise going crazy. If you can I'd try a wipe of the phone if everything seems in order.

I have the issue with sound pausing when the screen is off. That seems to happen less if the app is open when the screen turns off. That doesn't sound like your problem though...

Thanks for responding. When the phone gets sluggish, I could see that it might be the CPU. However, sometimes the phone works just fine except there is no audio or the audio cuts in and out every few seconds. When the phone doesn't get sluggish, looking at the screen shows that music or video is playing fine with little or no video stutter, but no audio. Battery usage is the same as it was and the phone doesn't get hot. RAM usage is normal.
