Audio through headphones issues

I have regularly used my N6 with headphones without issues for months but I am going nuts trying to use it the past couple days. It'll only go seconds before stopping, starting, skipping, and some annoying voice asking me to enable google voice. What has happened and how can I fix it?

I've had similar problems when the wiring and/or buttons of the headset control went bad. Can you try another headset?

FWIW, I have managed to get a couple of free replacement earbuds by contacting the manufacturer through their website and complaining about the "poor quality wiring."
