I've been noticing that when I move from a lit area to a dark area, the lighting on my phone is intact. It it's not until I turn the screen off and on that the brightness goes down. Does anyone know how to fix this, or is this something that plagues all smartphones?

I have mine turned off. I've never found it to function correctly on any device I've owned. And with the excellent battery life this phone has why worry about it.

This has happened to me on all smartphones. I just deal with it because my reasoning for using the feature is so I don't have an ultra bright screen in a dark room.

If you have the app Extended Controls, you can create a widget (or find a 1x1 in Widgets) that's a single 1x1 toggle that will control your screen brightness with touches. It will cycle through Auto/dim/brighter/brightest. Very cool. You can also customize the widget so it doesn't have the black or white background - just the little emblem. This is a widget I ALWAYS have on my home screen in a fixed location so I know where it is when I can't see the screen (ie: brilliant sunlight).

Great call - I use a similar feature in Notification Toggle just because I prefer to be able to make that change while staying in my current app / flipping down the notification shade.

I definitely agree that either method is more effective than auto brightness.
