Automated machines don't recognize my choices when dialed, why?

Automated machines don't recognize my choices when dialed.

my Galaxy s5 is refurbished it was a verizon phone and was unlocked to work with Metropcs (GSM unlocked). When I make a call I can't select options. So when the automated machine tells me to press 1 to get a hold of an operator, I dial 1 but that number isn't recognized by the automated machine on the other line. I hope I explained myself well. This happened several times and calling different numbers.
