[Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.2 (Updated 12/29/12)

Re: [Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.3 (Updated 08/18/12)

Total noob here.I have a Galaxy Nexus S running ICS.I do not know the exact model I have I suspect I am having the M200 variant. The guy who sold it to me in all probability rooted it to install ICS.My question is this.

1) How can I know if my phone has been rooted ? Can you install ICS without rooting and without an OTA update?I dont know what the previous owner did.
Edit: I found out that I have an unlocked bootloader. But When I try to install and run Voodoo Sound which requires a rooted device. It says
"Sorry, this device doesn't run a kernel supporting extended sound controls"
an I take it to mean the device is not rooted?

2) Can I find out definitively if my phone is M200 Nexus S?
Baseband M200KRKC1
Kernel Version 3.0.8-g5556123
android-build@vpbs1 #1 Thu Feb 2 16:56:02 PST 2012
BUILD NO : IMM76D

FASTBOOTMODE
Product Name : Herring
HW Version :Rev 11
BASELOADER : I9020XXKL1
Baseband M200KRKC1
CARRIER INFO KTT
Lock State - Unlocked

I pulled out the battery and it just says i9020 on the back of it as well as the phone box.The box also says made in Korea and it was imported into Romania. (I live in India and i bought the phone in India )

MY IMEI starts with 3569 if that helps

3) I want to install Jelly Bean and no OTA update here.If I do not know conclusively if I am having M200 will it brick if I install 9020T Roms, I remember reading somewhere they are very similar and some early unofficial Jelly Bean builds for 9020T worked on M200.I do want to install Jelly Bean that is why I was looking at the Nexus Oneclick Tookit

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Installed the OTA Verizon JB, but when i try to root the device it keep showing its failed. Phones unlocked, but I don't get whats going on. I've done it 3 times already. Any ideas?

EDIT: It says Error installing zip file 'data/media/!ReadyTo Flash

It can't open the Root_Files Dierctory because no such directory exists?

EDIT #2: Tried another method to root and it worked. not sure the toolkit wouldn't work though. :-\

I'm not sure if this was asked already, but will this toolkit work if I have the JB OTA update already installed? It's not listed as one of the options. Thanks so much, first time rooting/unlocking the GN here! :)

Unlocking works perfect, but rooting the OTA didn't and I tried 5 times. I was able to root it, by following post #2 on the general page. I'll post the link when I find it

EDIT: Here is the link to the post to follow how to root. It's very simple and you can use WUG's tool to help you do it if you prefer

Re: [Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.3 (Updated 08/18/12)

The tool kit does not seem to have the ota build version in the list of devices it can root. JRO03H is the JB version of the toro he has set up and we have build JRO03O. we will just have to wait for him to update the tool kit so we can get root from it. :)

Its super easy to root it yourself.. just flash a custom recovery (either via fastboot, or have Wug's do it for you), then in recovery flash this file: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/47300967/JB-SuperSU.zip

Bam, you're rooted :)

Is the current version updated to unlock and root with the recent ota jelly bean updates from Verizon.

Do it manually :)

Even after reading the hitchhikers guide, I like the idea of one click.

I assume any updates will be posted here anyway.

While automated tool kits are great and useful, nothing will be better for you than understand how the process works. Without that, your don't respect what your doing to your device and will take it for granted and when you run into a problem your safety blanket in a tool kit might not work. We always recommend doing the manual process not because we like to torture people but because it will only benefit you in the long run.

Myself used Wugs to root my first GNex, but after that I learned the adb commands and how to root/unlock manually and I have become a better Android user because of it.

I get that.

There are so many different options then.

Can you give me the way you rec. to root and unlock. I also want to make that nandroid backup that everyone recomends.

I will still get OTA updates correct?

Thanks

Here's how you get the recovery on your device. Before you do that, place the Superuser zip on your SDcard/internal storage (or just download it straight to your device, it'll be in "downloads")

After the recovery is flashed via fastboot, go to recovery mode from the bootloader (check the Don't Panic guide to get there manually), install the SU zip from SDcard (this will become apparent when you boot in, trust me :)), then reboot system. Hit yes to keep the recovery, no to revert back to stock.

I think that last reply is beyond my understanding.

I just looked at the sticky re: Rooting and unlocking.

Do you still rec. the first method listing using the r3-galaxynexus-superboot file etc.

It also has root instructions for the 4.0.4 version. Will it work with JB also?

Nope. It's a different build now. I'm going to retool that guide once I have time. If you give me 10 minutes I can type something up.

Re: [Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.3 (Updated 08/18/12)

Howdy! I realized today, I was missing some pictures on my phone and for the life of me, I can't seem to find them anywhere (not on the phone, not on G+, FB, etc.)...Then I remembered, a couple of months ago, I was playing around with this toolkit and created a full backup of my phone. The problem is that it is in a format I'm not familiar with (the file has an 'ab' extension). I tried to open the file with 7zip, but no go. Is there a way to look inside this backup file? I just want to know if the pictures are there, by some miracle, and if so, extract them. I don't want to restore the whole backup to my phone, if at all possible, just to see if what I'm looking for is there.

TIA!

edit - (and a little reading of the help file would have told me.... "...the entire backup file has to be restored at once. There is also no way to view the data backed up within the file."...) despite this, anyone know a way?

Re: [Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.3 (Updated 08/18/12)

I tried the automated way and everything seemed to go fine.

All I did was unlock and root.

I don't think i installed clockworkmod. How can I tell? I downloaded a app ROM MANAGER and it asks me if I want to install it.

I couldn't create a nandroid from the recovery menu because I could not boot into recovery without getting the android on it's wide with the red triangle. I think that is because I never installed the custom recovery.

1) How can I tell if it is installed?
2) If i do install it, will I no longer get OTA from Verizon
3) I used an app called Online Nandroid and it seemed to make a backup on my SD card in a folder called clockworkmod. It has 5 files, 4 of them *.tar, and one *.md5. Is that the Nandoid, that if needed, I could install Clockworkmod and restore?

Thanks again, sorry for all the basic questions.

Re: [Automated] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.3 (Updated 08/18/12)

I was using the Toolkit and the PdaNet drivers got installed successfully.Could I just uninstall them and continue with the next step?Or do I have to have an aborted PdaNet installation only to have the necessary drivers? I am on XP and I cannot cancel the driver installation. There is no pop up which asks further permission and the cancel button is disabled.Anyone?
Thanks in advance

EDIT: I got the success message when i checked for driver installation. So I assume I blundered my way through the steps

1. That red triangle is a dead give away for no custom recovery. You'll get that if you manually boot into the bootloader, choose recovery mode, and not have CWM or TWRP there.

2. Correct. It replaces a stock image, thus, no ability to take/accept the OTA.

3. I have never heard of the app; have a link?
