Automatically starting airplane mode

I would like to set my nexus 5 to start airplane mode automatically each night at say 11:30 pm so that I'm not exposed to sound or radiation while sleeping. But the two "automatic airplane mode" apps I've tried haven't worked dependably, even though one worked great on my old device.

Amy suggestions?

Do you have tasker app? If so, you can set up a profile to do that. (if you haven't used tasker in the past, it can do this, and a LOT more)

Edit: maybe Llama app (free) can do this too

I had to resort to the old fashioned way, I turn it on myself. I am about as reliable as one of those apps... I remember about half the time.

No, Tasker cannot do this under KitKat or even (pretty certain) Jelly Bean. The latest versions of Android OS have moved Airplane mode into the "protected" settings group and apps cannot change this mode. Some can do it only if the phone is rooted but I don't believe that works either with KitKat 4.4.2.

It can be done on the rooted N5 with 4.4.2 (I missed mentioning "rooted" in my earlier post)
Download the Secure settings plugin for tasker and enable the helper alternative (not helper). It works. I use it.

Have you tried Juice Defender? They have a schedule you can use, although I haven't used in on the Nexus 5. I guess that says something about my battery life with the N5.

Program a NFC tag to do this and leave it on your nightstand. When you lay the phone down on it at night (screen unlocked) it will automatically change the settings. Although frankly, it is just as easy to hold the power button and choose airplane mode.

Question: Why not just turn off the phone at night? Airplane mode kills everything anyway.

+1 for Tasker with Helper Alternative

For NFC to toggle airplane mode, it will require root too. But yes, that is an option if rooted.

Yep

Alarm clock, clock display.... Not to mention that you might also forget to turn it off, and then get that irritating interrupt

Sent from my Nexus 7 using AC Forums mobile app

Why? Airplane mode is just a setting already available. It does not require system access.
