Available memory question...

I have a D Inc and am using Advanced Task Killer. When I restart my phone ATK says there is 220M of available memory, yet after a period of about 3 minutes it goes down significantly (I have gottten as low as 44M of available memory)

First question is, does that seem normal? Also, I have read to not bother with app killers, but if apps are staying open and using resources wouldn't you want something to terminate them? I am a week into being an Android owner and am still figuring this stuff out so please be kind.

I have tried opening a bunch of apps and obviously the memory goes down, yet when I "kill" off apps using ATK the available memory only goes up a few MB. I'm not sure what settings to change or if I'm doing something wrong.

Just confused as to why the available memory goes down and never seems to go all the way back up unless I do a hard reboot of the phone.

I'm assuming your coming from BB or winmo and that's where you developed your memory OCD. I came from BB and for the first month I was checking memory and rebooting the phone because that's just what you do with BB.

First off if you want your Inc to run the quickest it can you have to delete your task killer and try system panel. System panel will you give you a TRUE list of applications that are currently running or active on your phone and a list of inactive application (which with TK will be listed as active).

Second stop checking and trying to manage your memory and active application because your phone will do a much better job managing then you can. You are killing apps that the Android system needs to be running for your phone to function the way it should. I used task killer for my first month and all it did was slow my phone and cause force closings. Trust your new OS it will do the job :)

I've been using ATK ever since I got the phone. If I delete it, do I NEED to mess with the system panel, or can I just not worry about it and let the phone do it's thing as far as kill/freezing programs (or whatever the terminology is).

You can just uninstall it from the market and if you paid for it you can always add it back at no cost and no you do not need system panel. Give it a try without TK and you will be happy :)

LOL, yea, I'm coming from the original Storm. I just deleted ATK and will give it a shot over the next few days to see how it goes. There are a ton of posts/threads on this but it seems like groups are split evenly into pro or con when it comes to task killers.

Like I said above I've tried with ATK and without it and from what I can see its much better without hope you have the same results :)

Yes, however there are a few apps that you can close with a task killer to save battery because of it syncing in the background etc. I don't use task killers, but there is articles out there that describe all this stuff, this site has a good one somewhere. Just like any other new thing read up and pick your best solution.

But generally task killers are not needed unless you have something extreme going on.

The thread is "do you use a task killer?" In the inc forum. I just posted in it, there are links to articles there.

I knew someone less lazy than me today would find it for ya lol. Thanks patches152.

So I read through some of the "To use or not to use ATK" threads...

I just want to be sure....because I get paranoid...

If I'm running Pandora and pause it (because there isn't an off button), is the system going to "freeze/kill" the program or whatever so it doesn't use up the memory?

That's my only concern about not using a task killer....programs like Pandora.

This is exactly what I am concerned about.

i pause mine and there hasn't been a situation of it closing or killing the app. how long are you considering pausing it for? for me it's just as long as it takes to refill my gas tank or whatever (i use it mainly while driving)

but no, the system won't kill it unless it crashes or freezes as an app glitch.

I just now realized there is a "quit" button in Pandora.

I guess that helps...lol
